With decreased attendance, how do churches survive? Where do we find authentic community and spiritual formation? How does the Church respond to the growing list of local and global injustices and crisis? If you find yourself wondering about these things, the Ecclesia Collective invites you to join a small group of people in San Diego for a collaborative conversation (kind of like a “skill share”) on May 23 and 24 (little less than a month away) to discuss practices and principles that just might help us find a sustainable way of being the Church within the North American context.

Technorati Tags: San Diego,Ecclessia Collective

Evangelicalism's odd dance with pop culture

From Slate and their review of Daniel Radosh's new book, Rapture Ready!

At some point, Radosh asks the obvious question: Didn't Jesus chase the money changers out of the temple? In other words, isn't there something wrong with so thoroughly commercializing all aspects of faith? For this, the Christian pop-culture industry has a ready answer. Evangelizing and commercializing have much in common. In the "spiritual marketplace" (as it's called), Christianity is a brand that seeks to dominate. Like Coke, it wants to hold onto its followers and also win over new converts. As with advertisers, the most important audience is young people and teenagers, who are generally brand loyalists. Hence, Bibleman and Christian rock are the spiritual equivalent of New Coke. Christian trinkets—a WWJD bracelet, a "God is my DJ" T-shirt—function more like Coca-Cola T-shirts or those cute stuffed polar bears. They telegraph to the community that the wearer is a proud Christian and that this is a cool thing to be—which should, in theory, invite eager curiosity.
Straightforward, if somewhat crude, merchandizing so far. But there is also another level of questions, which the creators of Christian culture have a much harder time answering: What does commercializing do to the substance of belief, and what does an infusion of belief do to the product? When you make loving Christ sound just like loving your boyfriend, you can do damage to both your faith and your ballad. That's true when you create a sanitized version of bands like Nirvana or artists like Jay-Z, too: You shoehorn a message that's essentially about obeying authority into a genre that's rebellious and nihilistic, and the result can be ugly, fake, or just limp.

via

<div class="wlWriterSmartContent" id="scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:2d421aea-0e66-4dea-be22-5ce8d22e1ed4" style="padding-right: 0px;
I just read The Macintosh Way by Guy Kawasaki. It was sent to me anonymously a month or so ago and it is a great book. Some excellent stories about Apple and early pioneers like Dave Winer are in there. If you can find it at a used book store, it is worth reading. Whoever it was who sent it to me, thanks!
A friend phoned me yesterday about the cabin. He asked if I had made any big plans yesterday and I said no, "I am up to my ears in paperwork." He replied, "That's why you need a place to retreat to" and hung up the phone. About 20 seconds later, I got an e-mail which said in full, "and that's why I am borrowing it from time to time as well." Sounds good to me.
Wendy's protein count is rising, so is her blood pressure, and blood sugar. She is off work for another week and they are hoping some medication helps with the preeclampsia Normally she would be okay with it but as she blogged, she is getting transferred to the 33rd Street Safeway which is only two blocks away from home and is one she has been tried to transfer to for about five years. It also means a big savings in gas and that store keeps shorter hours (because it is smaller, it is quicker to close) which means that she will be home a lot earlier when she is working in the office.
Len Sweet has a new podcast which may interest you.
I can't figure out why Hillary Clinton stays in the race. People say that she is running for 2012 but she is burning so many bridges in the Democratic Party that if Obama loses, she will take a lot of the blame for it. I think she still thinks she can win.
East side churches in Saskatoon want to send a 1000 people to the west side core neighborhoods and "clean it up". It's a nice idea but it makes it sound like the west side residents can't or won't do the job itself which is totally false. Riversdale and other neighborhoods are a lot more alive then people give them credit for and believe it or not, do clean up the neighborhood every year by themselves so I am not sure why having an army of SUVs and minivans descend on the area helps at all.
I like Stephane Dion but his proposal to make me pay even more for gas is a little tough to swallow politically. You know since I am paying $1.31 for a litre of it now.

P.J O'Rourke

and I buying a cabin. Of course like the comments, the e-mail was mixed.

One thing that came out was a lot of ignorance of what we paid. I didn't take out a mortgage or a loan, this isn't a villa, it is a beach shack. My measurements may be off a bit but it is a total of 336 square feet which if you think about it is too small to house anything more than a small car. While Saskatoon may have a booming resale market, the market for cabins at a Free Methodist camp and convention centre have remained pretty consistent from what I have heard.

I am kind of sensitive to the charge of selling out. I didn't blog about this but three times over the last winter, I went out, paid cash for a iPod Touch. Each time I took it back to the store before we got home. The purchase didn't feel right considering the context I work in. A lot of what I buy goes through that process and while the iPod Touch didn't pass the test, the cabin did.

At the same time work has been taking a bit of a toll on me mentally and physically. I have been sporting some dark circles under my eyes, co-workers tell me I look tired lots, and I find the need to get away at times. This is easier said than done.

I haven't written anything about this before but the Centre is in the middle of trying to open a women's emergency shelter. There are a lot of women and children who are on the streets or are in horrible housing situations. First hand I have heard stories of negotiating of sex for shelter which breaks my heart. A couple of weeks ago I talked to a women who had been sleeping outside for a couple of weeks. She was mentally challenged, on welfare, and didn't know where to turn. I was able to help her immediate needs for shelter but it made it painfully obvious that homelessness is complicated and once you find yourself homeless, the solution isn't going to come easy. The idea is a home that would keep the girls and kids safe over night and provide help in getting them back of the streets in the morning. I am glad that we are doing something about it but it is one tight deadline after the other and more funding applications than I ever thought possible. You know it is going to be a long form when it comes with an instruction manual on how to fill out the form.

This task isn't going to go away until fall. The cabin allows me to get away alone or with Wendy and Mark and either shut it down and sleep or get some work done on my notebook. Winston Churchill talked about the need for changing locations to avoiding burnout. If he is right, I am set. If not, I'll try a hat and cigar. I would like to think that after this fall things will slow down but there still is an alternative seminary, an urban rest stop, and a bunch of ideas I have burning for the men's shelter that need some time and attention.

A place to explore those ideas some more as well as relax seems good to me.

The other reasons have nothing to do with me. Wendy wants a place to retreat to and the idea of a place where Mark is free to roam is kind of exciting as well. The other day when Mark and I were going to the park, I picked up three dirty needles. While I don't mind talking the dog and kid to the park, knowing he was running down an alley where the bigger danger is garter snakes, is a nice thought as well.

Of course until that happens, I need to get some more funding applications filled out.

Mistakes in logo design

Yeah.

The world's first billion dollar home

It is actually costing $2 billion

Atop six stories of parking lots, Antilla's (photos) living quarters begin at a lobby with nine elevators, as well as several storage rooms and lounges. Arlington Beach to see what they call the rustic cabin. The main part of the cabin in a massive 14x20 feet with an add on of 12x8 feet which is another bedroom. The cabin is uninsulated, has no sewage but has power. I was bigger than what I thought and with some work could be a great summer hermitage and space to get away to. We actually thought it only had two bedrooms and it actually has three. After looking at the cabin for a couple of minutes, we decided to buy it from Arlington and we take possession on June 15th (they rented it out in early June). The cabin is 60+ years and originally came from Moose Jaw when the Free Methodist camp was still there. Structurally it is fine although I need to secure the bottom of the cabin. Being finding out a skunk is renting out the "basement" suite is something I don't want to run into.

We did go down to Dennis and Wilda Camplin's place for lunch and Starbucks coffee. Like 99% of rural Saskatchewan, Arlington serves weak coffee and Dennis and Wilda's place always has good coffee. Like all addicts, I instinctively know where to find a supplier.

Of course Dennis reminded me that by owning a 60+ year old, uninsulated, bathroomless 336 square foot cabin, I have sold out to materialism and consumerism. If Dennis is right and I have joined the dark side, then there will be a lot more John Maxwell and Joel Olsteen being quoted around here.

After a good lunch, we gave Dennis and Wilda a tour of the place (it didn't take long) and were greeted by some of the neighbors (it doesn't take long for news to spread). We don't have too many long term plans for the place. The short term plans include painting the exterior, cutting down those two trees crowding the cabin and getting it set up to accept guests this summer. The lack of a bathroom doesn't bother me that much. Like I said before, it is only a short walk to the washrooms and showers. Within feet of the cabin is the pipe for all season water which we will tap into in the next year or so. Until then we will be hauling some water.

While it is quite small, we actually think of that as a bonus. We really liked Dennis and Wilda's first cabin at Arlington Beach and realized that we wouldn't mind something similar. Actually it was listening to Dennis talk about their cabin at Arlington (and later plans to build a retirement place there) is what planted the seed of wanting a cabin there.

Mark's reaction was initially quite quiet. He actually seemed upset and sad until we drove around, showed Mark the horses, the lake, climbing wall, zip line, and hung out with the Camplins. After that he picked out the room he wanted, changed his mind, changed it again, and changed it back yet again. He wants to move out there all summer.

Wendy is most excited about the horses (apparently she has never ridden a horse), the basketball court (her game is so far gone, it's on the back of milk cartons), and relaxing on the beach.

There is wifi in limited spots on the grounds and sadly my cell works just fine there.

We uploaded some additional photos here.
Wendy has uploaded a bunch of photos of Arlington Beach from 2005
There is a Arlington Beach photo pool on Flickr as well.

Related...
It was the last straw.

"We decided we should meet the people that disapprove of us, because they don't know what the My Homes are and they don't know what they're talking about," said one of the residents, a 14-year-old girl who had just finished her chores when she caught the obscene gesture.

Encouraged by city Coun. Myles Heidt and supported by Coun. Maurice Neault, a group of Hampton Village homeowners circulated a petition and appeared before a civic committee this week to argue against a recommendation for the city to contribute about $84,000 from its innovative housing program toward My Home Five and My Home Six, which EGADZ purchased in March with funding from the federal and provincial governments.

The combined price of the two five-bedroom homes was $730,800. They were selected with the help of a Realtor and approved by the senior governments after an exhaustive six-month search for suitable houses in Saskatoon's tight real estate market. Heidt, Neault and the homeowners - among them Heidt's son, who owns a house in the area - argued the money would have been better spent in some other part of the city.

Several of them, including a woman who identified herself as a teacher working in Pleasant Hill, said they fear for the safety of their own kids once the My Home residents move in, suggesting the teens' presence will bring down property values and attract gang members and crime to the neighbourhood.

"I do not want my children to understand high-risk youth," one resident said. Heidt and Neault have argued for years that the concentration of care homes in their wards is too high - excluding seniors' homes, which they say are not a cause of concern. Civic administrators say their data shows a relatively even distribution throughout Saskatoon, however.

The city has not received any complaints about the My Homes since the first one opened in Dundonald in 1997. Several neighbours of the existing homes have become staunch supporters of the young residents and staff who live in them.

Good for Egadz for standing up for the kids and good on the Star Phoenix for running this story on the front page. I am lucky to see this at work but the impact of giving teens a nice safe place to call home is one of the most important things that we can do for them. That and the cost to the kids and society is a lot less than if we don't help them now.

Technorati Tags: Egadz,Myles Heidt,Maurice Neault,Hampton Village

Wendy

Wendy was put on bed rest last night after her blood pressure went dangerously high. Most of that has been covered by the federal and provincial governments under various health, social services and homelessness initiatives.

That's too much to spend on high-risk youth, the homeowners told the committee.
"How do we know we're getting value for our money?" asked Heidt, whose son Trent is one of the homeowners opposed to the two care homes.
"These homes are top-drawer. I believe it's too much money to put in for this type of program," Neault said.
Heidt and Neault are not members of the planning and operations committee, but they attended Tuesday's meeting and took part in the discussion anyway, along with Mayor Don Atchison. Both councillors have argued in the past that the concentration of care homes in their wards is too high, though civic officials say the homes are spread evenly throughout the city.

A rebuttal from Egadz Don Meikle.

A key purpose of the My Homes is to give at-risk youth "an opportunity to live in a neighbourhood where it's normal, where they're middle-class people," Meikle said.
"We are trying to show them that, yeah, people care about you and people want you. What kind of message are these homeowners sending back to them - that poor people can't live in a nice neighbourhood? That they don't deserve to live there?"

Sadly I think that is the message that is being sent. I have seen the MyHome's and they are not "top drawer" but basic housing for kids who are overcoming a tough situation. The two councilors are modeling the "We believe in it but not in our backyard" world view.

Back from Calgary

I am back from Calgary. I was traveling with another manager from the Centre. As we were in a meeting last night he got a call from his kid who was being rushed to the hospital. After waiting for more information, we packed up, checked out and left Calgary at 10:30 p.m. and started to drive home. It wasn't my favorite drive ever (my record isn't on the record) and we rolled into Saskatoon around 4:00 a.m. I drove most of the trip and I discovered Amp Energy drink. I was in a convenience store in Drumheller looking at what drink to get and I actually thought, "If it is good enough for Dale Earnhardt Jr., it is good enough for me." Amp Energy gave me a boost was a lot better tasting than Red Bull. While driving through the night isn't that much fun, it was nice to get home 18 hours earlier than expected.

The conference was a good one. I took some classes on disaster relief and I know more about the Incident Command System than I ever thought possible. Hopefully I will never have to put into practice what I have learned but if I do, I should be a bit more prepared. I also managed to get downtown and connect with Karen/OneHouse and also Dave King who returned my coffee mug Wendy gave him when he was in Saskatoon.

Mark is quite sick this afternoon and I am exhausted. The plan is to watch the Canadiens lose to the Philadelphia Flyers and then call it an early night.
<div class="wlWriterSmartContent" id="scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:d734f4f0-c5bf-4180-9c37-f0410a19c1b6" style="padding-right: 0px; There are amazingly cool cabins like this cabin in Minnesota but land in Saskatchewan is a hot commodity, do we want to get a Boler and pull it around the world? While I wish I did like camping more, I really don't and neither does Wendy. That being said, getting away to a big city can be a little costly as well.

While I was in Calgary, I heard about this cabin at Arlington Beach which is 180 kms from Saskatoon. It is an over glorified garden shed with one bedroom and no bathroom which makes it completely inappropriate for our growing family. On top of that there is a BIG bill owing for it's share of a new water treatment plant. If that isn't enough, there is no heat and no insulation (at least you don't have to worry about asbestos) Wendy and I chatted via e-mail and on Skype and we decided that it was an absurd purchase that meets none of our family needs. Anyone who would be buying it would have an insane about of work ahead of them. Let's not forget the price of rising gas which makes getting away to the lake really expensive. After deciding that this was a really BAD idea, we decided the best course of action would be to see if we make a deal work out for it.

<img style="border-top-width: 0px;

We will see if it all works out. We are heading out there on Saturday.

Wendy has some photos of Arlington Beach I am in Calgary until Wednesday to attend Mobilize 2008. It seems a little outside my normal interests but when there is an emergency in Saskatoon, I am one of the guys that is called to respond. The ones we have been a part of in the past have been good learning experiences and if I can learn some more on how to make them better for the victims, it is worth my time. Of course this is a big paradigm shift as usually I am the one causing the disasters, not helping with them...

Outside the hotel is a big display of emergency response vehicles from all over western Canada which means that if there is an emergency anywhere except for Calgary, there is no one around to respond.
Am off to Calgary tomorrow to attend Mobilize 2008. The original plan was for another manager from the Centre and I to be gone until Friday but we are coming back Wednesday night. We have a couple of projects that we need to take care of in addition to all of the other work we have to do. It's nice to get away but eventually you have to come back to all that paper collecting on your desk.

The conference is about emergency disaster relief. While we aren't exactly in a earthquake or hurricane zone, we have been a part of evacuations of northern communities in the past and I imagine we will be doing it again. Also the fire department requests our assistance from time to time when they are putting out larger fires.

Wendy seems utterly devastated that I am leaving home for a couple of days. Tonight she was out getting some movies to watch, making plans with friends, and making a list of fun things to do while I am gone. Apparently I can be replaced by a bunch of Meg Ryan movies, chocolate, and the dog sleeping in my spot on the bed.
<div class="wlWriterSmartContent" id="scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:a5469b36-0cc0-49b7-b55b-243e1f39044c" style="padding-right: 0px;
