Surf's Up

skimboard Mark want's to learn how to surf and since Saskatchewan is a little challenged in terms of places to surf, I went for the next best thing and I bought Mark a skimboard today for his birthday which is next week.  I was Jysk a week or so ago and saw one.  I read the instructions for how to skimboard on the back, thought of Mark at the lake and realized this could insanely funny to watch.  It's not surfing but probably the closest he will get to it in Saskatchewan.

Lake Diefenbaker to get Candu 6 reactor?

mutantfish Lake Diefenbaker has been suggested as the best site in Saskatchewan for a Candu 6 nuclear reactor

"Potentially, the Lake Diefenbaker region could be the site of a Candu 6 plant configured with two steam turbine generators instead of the standard 750-megawatt, single-steam turbine unit," the report said. "Plant output from this option would be split equally between Saskatchewan and Alberta."

We would also split any mutant fish with Alberta as well.

The Weekender

Today I was supposed to be in Regina relaxing by a pool with my beautiful wife Wendy and our wonderful son Mark. Things at work got changed around and instead of chasing Mark down a waterslide, I am at work today after spending 15 hours yesterday at work. I don't work many nights any longer and I kind of miss it so it was good. We aren't short staffed or anything but some of the staff had some things come up that I thought were more important than a trip to Regina so our trip got pushed back a day and we are leaving early tomorrow morning for Regina which should be fun.

It is the typical family holiday, hotel with a waterslide, a trip to the Saskatchewan Science Centre and a IMAX film on Sunday and on Monday we are visiting the brand new RCMP Heritage Centre. For years I have wanted to take some photos of the Saskatchewan Legislature but we will see if the sky is blue or not on the weekend. All in all it is a recipe for a Clark Griswald type family vacation.

I don't know if the hotel will have wifi but I don't plan to be online until I get back in Saskatoon on Tuesday. Mark has been complaining that his website needs work so depending on how many photos he takes, we may just log online to upload photos to his Flickr account.

The Saskatoon Salvation Army Community Centre 2.0

We have a new website at work, with a new Flickr account, a weblog (and RSS feed) a profile over at Upcoming, YouTube, and a brand new e-mail newsletter.  The domain name is so new, it has that new website smell to it (and Google hasn't crawled it yet).

When I am not working on the website, my main job is coordinating the  Residential Services department and you can find some more information about it there.  Oh yeah, before I forget, we are hiring.

Station 20 West

Station 20 West in Saskatoon Much has been written about the Government of Saskatchewan canceling Station 20 West.  Much of that has come from the competing rationale of the Government ministers themselves.  The final word seems to come from a bunch of rural MLA's, including Premier Brad Wall which had this to say, "basically a mall development, where we'd be competing with grocery stores, competing with others who are already renting now to community clinics in the area."

The problem is that there isn't any grocery stores in the area.  The closest grocery store is the limited selection of food at Giant Tiger (really inexpensive but limited selection), 33rd Street Safeway, or the Safeway/Superstore in Confederation Mall.  As for competing with other mall owners, they obviously don't see the benefit of a centralized service complex which would hold the following services.

There would be some other organizations housed here.

  • CHEP Good Food Inc: essential food security programming—community kitchens, children’s nutrition, Good Food Box, local food
  • Good Food Junction Co-op: neighbourhood-owned grocery store with good food at reasonable costs
  • Quint Development Corporation: affordable housing initiatives, small business development and loans, employment and educational support

This seems to be an decision based on ideology rather than anything.  The idea that the government should not be providing services it feels that private enterprise can and should.  Of course this ideology doesn't work in reverse as seen my Royal University Foundation looking for private money to bring Saskatoon's main emergency room, ICU, and other facilities up to date.

Is it a good project?  On the government's side, the Westside Clinic is already operational and I assume isn't going anywhere and they house SWITCH.  While I agree with the idea of an affordable food co-op but from it's inception, I have questioned if they are going to be affordable (which may be secondary to availability).  Some friends have been involved and the questions on affordable pricing remain unanswered.  It isn't a flaw with the business plan but a volume and distribution question.  Also some would argue proximity to St. Paul's Hospital.  So there are some questions of whether or not the government should be funding a project like this.

On the Station 20 West side is availability.  In my job one of my biggest challenges right now is providing health care and in particular, mental health care to the men who call the shelter home.  In terms of health care, emergency room health care is not a good solution for the system (cost) or to the patient (lack of regular checkups).  While it can be hard to get accessible health services for all of us, it is a lot harder to find a doctor if one doesn't have car.  All of us in the house drive across town to see our doctor which would be a couple hour trip if we had to use a bus or incur a $40 bill if we used a taxi.  That is a HUGE obstacle to those that I serve at work.

Speaking of availability, that is the main advantage of the co-operative grocery store.  As I just said, I am not really convinced that it is sustainable.  At night the Shopper's Drug Mart on 22nd street often has one clerk and two uniformed security guards to stop robbery and to stop shop lifting.  One can't tell me that it is making any money at all under those conditions.  There is also another reason why Safeway, Loblaw, and Super Valu has all pulled out of the city centre.

Despite that, affordable food is hard to come by.  Wendy and I shop at Safeway (primarily at 33rd Street where we live and Wendy picks up stuff at the Centre at Circle and 8th where she works), Co-op, and Costco.  We save a lot of money by being able to pick and choose.  For the poorest in Saskatoon, there are not grocery stores in close proximity and if you would like to join me at the 7-11 on 22nd Street on days when government checks are sent out, it looks like a riot hit it by midnight (There is evidence that Scott Reid was somewhat correct when he made his quip about beer and popcorn).  People are spending an incredible amount of their checks on food from a 7-11.  Is it a great decision?  Of course not.  There are people with a very, very, limited food budget spending it in a horrible location (price wise and healthwise - don't get me wrong, I love a good 7-11 burger but it isn't a lifestyle I would recommend).  The alternative is having to get a cab to go to a grocery store which is another huge budgetary issue.  The people that most often who need to take a cab to a grocery store are often those that can't afford to.  It is the reason why I was asked to drive people home from the warehouse when the Salvation Army handed out Christmas hampers.  If we hadn't, the burden to get a FREE hamper may have too much for people to receive one.

If you drive through Riversdale, Caswell Hill, and Mayfair, you see a bunch of homes that used to be corner stores and small grocery stores.  Jane Jacobs wrote extensively on what happened to them but we abandoned them for the big box stores.  While it made life better for some, it hurts those that can't make it to the mega malls.  It is one of the reasons why I take Mark as much as possible to the Roxy Theatre and not the Galaxy.  I don't want to lose something that means so much to the community.

Of course this isn't a fight about movie theatres, it is about providing a place for healthy food, medical services, affordable dental care (even if it is done by students... shudder...), and more mental health providers in a place that desperately needs them.  It is only $8 million dollars out of $9.1 billion dollar budget (wow, do we know how to spend money in Saskatchewan, where is Janice MacKinnon when we need her).  It is also about investing in a part of the city that has seen so little investment over the last 40 years.  Yes Meewasin and the Farmer's Market is nice but Riversdale has been ignored for much of the last several decades despite being represented by a New Democratic Premier since 1991.  Investing in that part of the city also sends the huge message that we believe that we are not willing to leave behind some of the provinces poorest.

I'll leave the last word to the editorial writers of the Saskatoon Star Phoenix.

Gantefoer believed the grant was cut because there was little chance the proponents of the project could raise the "$12 million to $14 million" needed to come from private interests. By next day he was admitting he was in error, and the necessary private funds were a minuscule portion of that amount.

Even more incredibly, McMorris suggested the money had to be pulled from a project that would make it easier for inner-city residents to access timely health care because the funds were needed to buy a fire alarm for St. Paul's Hospital and to ward off a mould attack. The decision, he assured us, had nothing to do with politics.

At least Wall's weak excuse was credible, if only because it illustrated an ideological basis to the ill-considered decision. The premier suggested the grant was killed because his government saw the inclusion of a co-operatively run grocery store within Station 20 as a threat to private industry.

But to cancel the entire project rather than deal directly with the situation is to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

When the NDP absurdly castigated Wall for giving his 14-year-old daughter driving lessons on a publicly owned rural gravel road, it demonstrated just how far out of touch with rural Saskatchewan that party has become.

But Wall's clear lack of understanding about the dire needs of core neighbourhoods and the history of Saskatoon demonstrates just how out of touch he remains with urban Saskatchewan. Considering the role the province's largest city is playing in the economic revival of Saskatchewan, such ignorance could have dire consequences.

The proponents of Station 20 want a grocery store not because they want to compete with private industry but because many people in core neighbourhoods don't have the wherewithal to keep hiring cabs to go shopping. The last of the downtown grocery stores left more than a decade ago.

To ignore such realities for the sake of political partisanship and ideological reasons is an inauspicious beginning for a government that Saskatchewan people hoped could lead them to a prosperous future.

If you have strong feelings about this, contact your MLA and let them know.

Different Opinions

I don't get the paper at home but here is the story that got me up at 5:00 a.m. and off to work so I could get the Star Phoenix.   The story does have some factual errors in it.  We did not turn away a mother and 20 day old child.  She was housed for the weekend and was safe.  I was feel I was quoted out of context but it happens and it wasn't that serious that I can't chalk it up to a misunderstanding.

RBC: "Saskatchewan is the new Alberta"

According to RBC, Saskatchewan's future is looking up.
Saskatchewan"Saskatchewan is the new Alberta - holding the top spot nationwide on growth across all key housing indicators including housing starts, house prices, residential building permits and resale activity," Holt explained in a company news release.

Fox Business News has more

I grew up in Calgary in the late 70s and early 80s and still think of myself as a Calgarian at some times.  At the same time the Calgary where I grew up and left is a lot different than the Calgary that exists today.  The last couple of years in Saskatoon give me the same feeling.  Saskatoon isn't the same as it was a couple of years ago.  Yeah we have an Adidas outlet store but for many people, we now have housing that is no longer affordable for the middle class, rents now longer affordable for the poor, and now I am seeing friends who don't own, moving to other parts of the province which saddens me as well.

Kindersley

Yesterday I took a road trip with my boss to the town of Kindersley, 2 hours out of Saskatoon for some meetings with a variety of social aid agencies serving the area. We had three spread out meetings which meant that with travel, it was a 14 hour day but the meetings were good and I learned some stuff and met some great people.

One of the highlights of the trip was seeing the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Kindersley. I am not a big fan of thrift stores in general although Wendy buys a lot of clothes at Value Village for Mark but this one was different. While many are over glorified junk yards, this one was actually a place that one would want to shop at and had a small army of volunteers making sure appliances, televisions, electronics, and other things were good quality, getting tested or fixed, and clean before it was sold. If there was the perfect business model for running something like that, I think I saw it yesterday.

It was a long day but I was encouraged to see people coming together in a community to make sure that people are taken care of.

I need a lawyer

Not for myself but I need someone that five or six times a year I could e-mail or talk over a scenario and either be given a quick opinion or send me to the relevant section of Saskatchewan law for the correct information I would really appreciate it. I have access to counsel or really serious stuff but occasionally I would like to quickly be explained how a Saskatchewan law works (criminal and family law in particular) for work. I don't even really need an official opinion but just an explanation of how certain laws work in certain situations. If you know of anyone who would be interested, e-mail me at jordoncooper AT gmail.com. Thanks.

2008's First Blizzard

Last night a blizzard rolled into town according to Environment Canada

Blizzard conditions persisting over western areas this morning and should gradually taper off by afternoon. Blizzard conditions expected to develop over eastern areas this morning and then taper off this evening.

An intense low pressure system over western North Dakota this morning will track northeastward into northwestern Ontario by Tuesday morning. This system has generated 5 to 10 cm of snow across western Saskatchewan during the night and this snow continues to spread to the northeast. Strong northerly winds on the back side of this system have been gusting over 60 km/h at times and combined with the falling snow, blizzard conditions have been widespread across western and central areas of the province during the night. Southeastern areas will escape much of the snow, so blizzard conditions are less likely but there is still some snow developing over Montana that may move into southeastern Saskatchewan later today. The winds will definately pick up over the eastern later today and thus the potential for blizzard conditions is still there for later today and this evening. Blizzard conditions should ease off over western areas near noon. The strong northerly winds are ushering in a frigid Arctic airmass and wind chill values will be in the minus 40 to minus 45 range today through Tuesday. Temperatures will fall dramatically today over southeastern areas as this Arctic airmass sweeps in so extreme wind chills are expected there later today and last into Tuesday.

Wow, there is absolutely nothing in that paragraph that makes me want to go out today or tomorrow. It isn't as bad as last year's "blizzard of the century" but not a nice day either.

Nooooooooo!

Kent Auston for Premier

Kent Austin bailed out on Saskatchewan again and is leaving the Roughriders to be the offensive coordinator at Ole Miss.  I can't be too angry at Austin as he did lead Saskatchewan to a Grey Cup and Eric Tillman is still the General Manager (In Eric We Trust) and the opportunity to be an offensive coordinator at a SEC school is a great opportunity but... there is a lot of anxiety right now in Riderville.

Why would he leave Regina for Ole Miss, well Austin played quarterback at the University of Mississippi from 1981 to 1985 and grew up in nearby Nashville.  He is Ole Miss's second all-time passer and was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame.  It is pretty hard to compete with that.  Still, it is like a kick to the groin for the faithful today.

Of course if he ever comes back, it appears that he has a future in politics.

Saskatchewan Wins the 95th Grey Cup

Saskatchewan Roughriders logo The Saskatchewan Roughriders just won the 95th Grey Cup by beating the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, 23-19 in a game that should not have been that close except for the Roughriders offense sputtered quite a bit.  My favorite was when Winnipeg's coach challenged a video replay decision.  Yes, he threw his challenge flag to challenge a ruling that had already been reviewed by the video replay official.  Brilliant.  This also means that we pass Sarnia on the all time Grey Cup wins list.

Time to Bury Sarnia

This came from Joe Manafo but if Saskatchewan wins today, we pass Sarnia on the all time Grey Cup championship list.

The Toronto Argonauts lead the way with 15, with the Edmonton Eskimos next in line at 13. Look wa-a-a-a-a-a-ay down and you will find four teams beside the No. "2'' -- Saskatchewan Roughriders, Sarnia Imperials (ouch), Balmy Beach (gulp) and Ottawa Senators (who says they can't win the big one?).

Remarkably, Saskatchewan -- the home of a beloved franchise with a history dating back to 1910 -- is still mired behind the University of Toronto (four) and Queen's University (three) on the all-time list. And the mighty Imperials, who captured the Cup in 1934 and 1936, have yet to be surpassed by the Riders.

Saskatchewan Roughriders are headed to the Grey Cup

Saskatchewan Roughriders logo I moved to Saskatchewan in 1984 and the Saskatchewan Roughriders have let me down more often than not but this year has been different.  A new coach in Kent Austin and the amazing play of Kerry Joseph have actually led to a year that Saskatchewan can be proud of.  After their first home playoff game in 19 years, they beat the Calgary Stampeders  and then headed to Vancouver for the Western Conference Final against the B.C. LionsThey won that game and are now headed to the Grey Cup against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (who are without their star QB, Kevin Glenn who broke his arm in the victory).  Expect a lot of Saskatchewan Roughrider links in the next week.

Contextless Election Links

Randy Burton gives the Saskatchewan Party Election Platform a once over but the oddest part of his article is the NDP's response

After four hours of looking at it Friday, Finance Minister Pat Atkinson summoned reporters to her campaign office to talk about the platform, but could find little to say about it.

Now I am biased towards it but if Pat Atkinson can't figure out how to attack the oppositions election platform, this is going to to be a short election.

On a related remark, Murray Mandryk has a column on how some left wing bloggers are hurting the NDP campaign.

Saskatchewan Liberal leader, David Karwacki has an interesting idea for keeping kids in school.  Pay their parents.  New York City is experimenting with something similar and it has worked in other parts of the world.

Finally, the Star Phoenix asks Brad Wall 20 questions that doesn't make him sound very scary, puts it on the front page, and does some damage to the wolf in sheeps clothing ad campaign the NDP are running.  Of course the best answer from it is that he is a football addict which means that we won't be bothered with government business on Saturdays and Sundays from May to January.  Of course it could mean that the first Saskatchewan Party megaproject is a NFL franchise for Moose Jaw.

Saskatchewan Politicians Smooze God as Well

I took a shot at Barack Obama last month for campaigning at church so I thought it would be fair to take a shot at Saskatchewan Liberal leader David Karwacki for posting as a campaign event him going to church. While I don't see anything wrong with going to church on a Sunday, I do have a problem with advertising it as a campaign event, no matter who the candidate is.

John Gormley (now a blogger) has some more on the campaign including how the NDP's universal health care plan is backfiring badly.

Same Old "Baaaad" Ads

It's almost election time in Saskatchewan (I guess that is now Saskatchewan!) with the NDP starting the fun with some ads describing the Sask Party as wolves in sheep's clothing. The website is here.

I could go on and on about the ad campaign and how wrong it is for negative advertising to be used but we all know by now that it works. I do find it odd that the Saskatchewan Party hasn't really responded to it other to dismiss it but also I find it interesting that this is the opening salvo. Of course while parties do their own polling, with only a million people, the media doesn't poll here like it does in other provinces so we don't know how effective they really are (and neither party seems willing to release that information).

One of the big issues is that the Sask Party has Alberta envy. You know, Alberta with their lower taxes, better roads, higher paying jobs, NHL teams, nicer CFL stadiums, NHL teams, Glenbow Museum, Calgary Tower, NHL teams, and free trade agreement with B.C. (which helps create better jobs and hopefully a NHL team). Kidding aside, since when do Canadians fear other Canadians. That and Calgary is the biggest city in Saskatchewan (make that Saskatchewan!).

Of course the election could be about differening visions for Saskatchewan (oops, Saskatchewan!) which I think would be good for the province. Sadly in the end, it will be an election about bashing Alberta, bring up the name Grant Devine as much as possible, slinging mud and, well, lambchop over there.

Virus

Okay, it looks like I have a virus. Not my computer but me. Doctor suggested it may be a mild case of this but am waiting for more blood work and now I need some more sleep. I am also not ruling out the dog is somehow behind this in her effort to get more space on the bed.

Update: I have been sleeping in 20 to 24 hour chunks at a time since Thursday so I am not at the top of my game and it is West Nile but not the serious I am going to die version, just the annoying flu like symptoms and overwhelming fatigue. I had more energy when I had mono and now even sleeping is tiring me out.

How did I get it? Well I live in Saskatchewan and am kind of used to getting bitten by a mosquito or 50. I don't put on bug repellant that often which may be a habit I may want to change. The good news is that yesterday I was up for a whole 6 hours and only had to sleep about 14 hours to recover.

The best of Saskatoon Online

  • SaskatoonLive.com :: While I can't wait until the Saskatoonist launches (check out the Gothamist for why I want it).  SaskatoonLive.com is a wonderful website that chronicles what makes Saskatoon great.
  • Craigslist :: The famous Craigslist finally expanded to Saskatoon two years ago and while it is huge is places like San Francisco and New York, it has been slow to be adopted by those of us in Saskatoon.  It is free to post your events, classifieds, and other things you think people in Saskatoon need to know about.  If you do have something for sale, why not post it here.  The more it is used, the more people it attracts, and the more useful stuff is posted here and a good thing keeps getting better and better.  You get the idea.  The same thing could be said for using Kijiji.
  • Saskatoon.ca :: The City of Saskatoon is surprisingly good.  If you need civic information, you can find it here.
  • Upcoming.org :: Another site that is very popular in other cities but it underused in Saskatoon.  Basically it is a place for upcoming events and a great place to post concerts, church events, community events, conferences.... those kinds of things.  Owned by Yahoo!, it also allows you to create groups where events for a common people of interest can all be posted.  More of us need to post events to it!
  • Mendel Art Gallery weblog :: One of the easiest ways to find out what is new or coming soon to the MAG.
  • Saskatoonhomepage.ca :: Horrible URL but one of the few places where you can can get current news for Saskatoon.  CKOM's website is another option.  Yes I know the Star Phoenix has a website but most of the content is locked.  CBC Sask is another option but only has a couple of stories a day and it is Saskatchewan specific rather than Toontown specific.  The bad part is neither site published a RSS feed.
  • The Paris of the Prairies Flickr Group :: Some of the best photos taken in and around Saskatoon submitted by almost 100 photographers.  There is also a Saskatchewan group as well.

Photos from Waskesiu

I need a break

Wendy, Mark and I are heading north next week to Waskesiu for a couple of days. We booked a log cabin like the one below and will about a 1/4 block away from the beach and some of the shops that Waskesiu has to offer.

Hillcrest Armstrong Cabins

We had tossed around the idea of going to Edmonton but the idea of twelve hours of driving there and back didn't win me over. Neither did the idea of paying $1.25 a litre for gas. The big attraction was that Mark wanted to go to Galaxyland which we will take him to but there isn't enough time over two days. I will book some days off this fall and we will probably do the trip then.

Normally when I would go on a vacation like this, I would take some stuff along to "get done". I find that when I am up in the northern part of the province, I find myself a peace but also my but this time I think my to-do list consists of racing remote control cars, beating Wendy at tennis, and tossing the frisbee around.

I do want to take some photographs. For those of you who are Waskesiu regulars, anyone have any favorite places?

Our new Saturday

Wendy generally works Saturday evenings at Safeway and I work Saturday and Sunday during the day at the Salvation Army, we don't have a lot of days to get away as a family. Yesterday we woke up and instead of sending Mark to school, we got in the car and drove north to Prince Albert National Park for a day of driving around, taking some photographs, hiking, and relaxing.

Generally we take the main highway into Waskesiu but yesterday we took Highway 263 by Christopher and Emma Lakes and stopped to explore an abandoned Sandy Lake. We took Maggi along and she had a romp around chasing gophers and barked at a deer. After that we drove into a still asleep town of Waskesiu where the only life were some cabin owners and Parks Canada employees and the grocery store. Wendy posted some of the photos we took yesterday.

Because it was at the last minute we decided to go, we didn't have our iPods charged. We grabbed both of ours. Thinking back to a decade ago, it is a lot easier to grab an iPod than it is to get mix tapes, CDs or even being stuck with bad small town radio stations.

Since it is likely that Wendy and I mine schedules will be keep us from enjoying the weekend during the summer, it will be some Monday trips starting when Mark is out of school. The nice thing is that we should be expecting some empty highways and open roads.

The Legacy of Grant Devine

It was 25 years ago that Grant Devine swept into power in Saskatchewan

"I wonder if history will sort of see his grander vision as the right one, just conducted way, way too fast," Mandryk said.

I remember meeting Devine for the first time in 1986 and he made a huge impact on me (I was 12 and I still have the picture) I think his legacy is mixed at best and it is always hard being the last one of an era (deficit financing) but I think at the same time, he saw something great in Saskatchewan that others haven't always seen. A couple of the members of his cabinet were huge influences on me growing up and in many ways, I would not be the person I am today if it wasn't for them (and yes they were among those involved in the Tory Fraud Scandal). Odd how things turn out.

The Covenant Church

While in Prince Albert, I managed to find some time for lunch with Randall Friesen of Gateway Covenant Church and Steve Menshenfriend of Blackstrap Covenant Church in Dundurn. It was a good time of sharing, laughing, and exchanging ideas. Steve and Blackstrap Covenant Church has the same problems that Church of the Exiles in that neither one of us has a physical location and we had a good discussion about that.

It was a nice experience being at Gateway in Prince Albert. It was one of the few churches that I have ever seen that wasn't painted white or eggshell inside and actually has colors. The other thing that struck me was the art hanging on the walls in the sanctuary which gave a great vibe to being in there. Randall has some interesting plans as well which I think would be interesting for other churches to watch. Wendy and I hope by to stop by this summer and take in a service.

Red Earth First Nation

For the last two years, Red Earth First Nation has been evacuated from their community to Saskatoon and Prince Albert. The Salvation Army is in charge of feeding everyone who has been taken to Saskatoon and lodged at Cosmo Civic Centre.

Today Wendy and I went down to volunteer for what may the first of many times this week for a couple of hours. The food is prepared by Kelsey and then taken to the Cosmo Civic Centre where we hand out as much food as they want. There is a crazy amount of volunteers there, from social workers, to the Red Cross, to hospital services, and City of Saskatoon employees as well and everything to make a bad situation better. It was a little weird walking in the first time because the scene reminded me of the Katrina photos of the Alamodome in Houston but on a smaller scale. A couple hundred cots set up on the arena floor but other than that the likeness stopped. People were in a really good mood as it is a short term stay and while they are going home to a mess, their homes aren't destroyed. At dinner quite a few of the kids had just come back from the mall and some shopping and it is a small enough group that there was also some activities planned in the city.

The only difficulty Wendy and I had was the fact that some of the smaller kids only spoke Cree but the good thing is the reason they we asking me things is they saw I had some ice cream so things worked out okay despite the language barrier. Ice cream seems to transcend language.

A couple of people have e-mailed me where can they donate stuff to. From what I heard from the media, material donations can be made to the Salvation Army Thrift Stores while money can be donated to the Red Cross.

Cymric, Saskatchewan :: A one post photoblog

I don't know if any of you read Bluejake, which is an excellent photoblog that hopes to photograph all of New York City.

I don't have that kind of time on my hands so I want to present to you, my finished project. I have now photographed all of Cymric, Saskatchewan.

Cymric, Saskatchewan

That's it but I think it was 5 seconds that was pretty well spent.
