Willow Creek Community Church
Willow Creek has their website designed by an outside firm?! That is so odd. They put on conferences talking about all of this stuff and then you find out that some of their best stuff comes from the outside...

Bill Simoni was suprised that that all of the currupt politicians aren't in Washington. Canada may not be known for much (outside of curling and hockey) but we believe in restoring those who have broken the law and then allow them to make the laws! A side ramble... what are the ethical ramifications of allowing someone who has run afowl of a law to vote on actually changing the law? While you are thinking about this, make sure you check out Bill's great blog!

What Did Cluetrain actually say?
Chris Locke does a great job of explaining what the Cluetrain actually says for those who have never read the book. I have read it and loved the book. He really captures the essence in this excellent post.

InstaPundit.Com
This is another favorite blog of mine. Glenn Reynolds does a great job of covering the web, privacy issues, technology and a very wide net of subjects that interest him. Through his blog, my worldview widens too.

How the Church failed by reinventing Christianity I found this through CT's weblog - What is occurring is not merely the secularisation of the prevalent moral culture, but also the secularisation of the Church's understanding of its own mission (Edward Norman, The Daily Telegraph, London)

Yahoo! News - Europe tries to get on same page You can almost hear the end times prophets pounding on the pulpits now... a unified Europe. I think the things that divide will be greater than those things that unite. Canada is an example of how hard it is to get everyone on the same page. From the article, "Each member has its own strong cultural traditions; most speak different languages. They squabble among each other and disagree about everything from supporting U.S. plans for a missile-defense system to adopting the euro. (Britain, Sweden and Denmark have refused to adopt it.) Often, the EU more closely resembles a giant, dysfunctional family than a union of countries. Members can't even agree on what to call the written document expected to come out of the meetings that start Thursday. Constitution? Charter? Legal framework?"

UPDATE This is nothing more than an urban legend. It never did appear in the Ottawa Citizen. That has not stopped several papers from running with the story. Nice Canadian journalism.

This was actually in the Ottawa Citizen, Canada.

Can you imagine working for a company that has a little more than 300 employees and has the following statistics:
30 have been accused of spousal abuse
9 have been arrested for fraud
14 have been accused of writing bad checks
95 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses
4 have done time for assault
55 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit
12 have been arrested on drug related charges
4 have been arrested for shop lifting
16 are currently defendants in lawsuits
62 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year
Can you guess which organization this is?

It is the 301 MPs in the Canadian Parliament
And they write our laws.

Church and state don't mix

An interesting article in today's National Post that does a good job of showing how the press views social conservatives, evangelicals, and the right of Canada.

- The Beef Industry
- Menu at Fuddruckers
- Body for Life
- 4x4 pickups

Day off today
I spent today enjoying Canada's win yesterday. Everywhere you drove in Saskatoon today, people were celebrating with signs or just talking about it. A nice way to spend a day off. Last night Wendy, Mark and I met Jeb and Sharla at our favorite restaurant, Crawdaddies to celebrate and relive the game. To follow the trend of Jeopardy categories.

Jeb's categories would be...
- Comics and Superheroes
- Star Wars
- Adobe software
- The Edmonton Oilers
- Big Sugar
- The Tick

Sharla's would be...
- Lakeview Church's phone system
- Hairdressing products
- Chick flicks

John C. Dvorak: Cult of the Cluetrain Manifesto
John Dvorak griping against blogs but in the end who cares. Dvorak has his thing. He is a computer columnist and not a bad one at that. I think we see computer columnist and confuse knowledge about that with knowledge about some of the human factors that deal with how we interact because of computers. Computer columnist does not make sociologist. I don't know what he has against blogging and the Cluetrain Manifesto but his article is off base and seems to be more of a flame than a thought out opinion.

CANOE 2002 Games - Brooks goes out grumbling Did Canada benefit from some upsets, yes but complaining about the system does nothing. Is it Canada's fault that Tommy Salo played horrible or the Czech's didn't play their best in the quarterfinals? Roenick and Ritcher said it best, "we were beaten by the better team." Herb Brooks needs to accept it too.

Team Canada 2002 Team Canada official site.

Canada Beat U.S. 5-2 to Grab Hockey Gold

Canada won with a pair of goals each by Jarome Iginla and Joe Sakic, while Paul Kariya added a single. The second goal by Iginla and Sakic were beautiful! If you aren't from Canada, you have no idea how big hockey is here and how big this game is. It will go down with the 1972 Summit series and the 1987 Canada Cup win as some of the biggest games in Canadian hockey history.

I have been a fan of Team Canada hockey. My dad took me to a 1981 Canada Cup game @ the old Calgary Corral where we stood and watched the Canadians beat the CCCP before the Russians killed the Canadians in the final. The whole country stood still in 1987 when Gretzky to Mario won the Canada Cup. In 1988 the Olympic team practiced and played at the brand new Saskatchewan Place. I got goalie Sean Burkes autograph which was huge at the time. In 1989 the World Jr's were played here with Team Canada winning again. The Hockey Hall of Fame also came. It was the first and probably last time I could touch the Stanley Cup.

'Bloggers' emerge from internet underground

Canada's National Post joins the media parade in writing about blogging. The article has this stupid statement in it,

"As it stands, it's doubtful that personal blogs will supplant newspapers anytime soon. "There could be no blogs without full-time reporters collecting news and full-time editors putting out papers," Layne said."One valid criticism of bloggers is that they sometimes just link back and forth to each other. Remove the actual journalism from the Web and you've got a couple of hundred thousand people talking about nothing."

No kidding, if you got rid of journalists covering news you would also have a lot of TV anchors, radio personalities, late night TV hosts, all talking about nothing. Believe it or not, many bloggers have opinions of their own too.

It does follow up with this, "Furthermore, Layne hopes more newspaper columnists might learn something from bloggers' attitudes. "U.S. papers are so damned dry," he said. "I mean, who picks up the paper and says, 'I wonder what the Pentagon reporter has to say this morning.' The good bloggers are not much different from old-time newspaper columnists. They have a style, they have a personal connection with readers, they don't seem like factory-made op-ed writers. Maybe newspapers will inject some of this first- person style into the news columns. What I hope news sites learn from blogs is that personality matters."

Personality and voice do matter and that is what so many media outlets don't understand. Blogs have real people behind them with real opinions. The most widely read part of any paper is the editorials and the letters to the editor. It is amazing that it took years for journalists to learn that objective journalism has its place but it is the opinions that draw us back.

The Jackie Reimche Post

I was explaining my blog to Lakeview Church's wonderful assistant to the talking head and Jackie was shocked that I hadn't mentioned her in my blog at all. She was amazed that I could find interesting things to talk about and not talk about her. (one of these days I will have to tell her that the world revolves around the sun and not her but why burst all her balloons at once?

Jackie is known for her ability to scare the other Jacqui at Lakeview Church, her cats, her evil stare, and that she lies about where she is from. She tells people that she is from Swift Current but in reality, she is from Neville, Saskatchewan. (see map). For some reason, Jackie's picture is not on Lakeview Church's site (Jackie appears to be hiding from something -- if that is her real name), so I included a picture of a map to Neville. It doesn't get more boring than that.

eaton's eaton's is being closed out by Sears in Canada. I can't say I am suprised. Eaton's was a horrible store to shop in at the end but their new logo and look was darn cool. Tool bad it is finally gone.

I had heard that Sear's was thinking of using it as a catalogue and internet brand. I am kind of suprised it never happened. Eaton's was still a powerful brand for many Canadians and combined with Sears catalogue operations I think it could have made it. Then again Sears had its own problems.

CBC News: Microsoft Media Player logging consumer use Should we be suprised? Real, MusicMatch, and even Winamp do similar things, although they do ask for permission.

CBC News: Prairie farmers warn of drought, bugs, financial ruin I live in Saskatchewan and I am used to farmers constant complaining. I have been victimized by them deciding to convoy down Idywyld Drive at 4 mph protesting against Ottawa (yet drive down Saskatoon's streets). I know many are suffering but is another bailout the best option. Something obviously is wrong with the industry and something has to change. $5 billion every year doesn't seem to be working.

Yahoo! Sports: 2002 Winter Olympics - Russia Says It Withdraws Threat to Pull Out Is anyone shocked by this? They aren't the only ones to see bad officiating. Anyone see the Canadian women's hockey team game last night? The American referee was horrible. Don Cherry called it the worst officiating in the history of hockey. Many would agree.

Revolving clergy harms religion

I agree with this article. I have spent seven years in Spiritwood and four @ Lakeview and while it is a whacked arrangment, tenure has made each job easier and easier. Mike Slaughter writes in unLearing Church (great book by the way) that part of his success at Ginghamsburg has just been because he has been there soooo long. I think he is right. All I know is that I am enjoying pastoring now more than ever before and I wouldn't want to have missed this because I thinking that the grass is greener on the otherside. The flip side of this is that I have served in a great congregation that has shown a very young pastor a LOT of grace (thanks! I never say that enough).

Canada Gripped by Severe Strain of Hockey Fever

Okay, I confess. I spent the entire afternoon watching Canada beat Belarus soundly. It was peer pressure. Mike and Jeb were watching and Kevin and Dean later joined in. I didn't want them to watch the game alone. It was a good game although I don't agree with the Belarus coach pulling their goaltender in the second period. I don't think it was his fault. The only reason was that he was trying to rest him for the American's or Russians.

Canadian Women Avenge Nagano Loss, Take Hockey Gold Amazing story. They have been beaten non-stop by the Americans for over a year but they won a game when it counts. It is hard to win when you are overwhelming favorites like the American women, just ask the St. Louis (I still call them the L.A.) Rams.

UPDATE

Some more thoughts... I just was reading about the American team placing the Canadian team flag on the floor and how upset everyone was about it. Give a very classy American team the benefit of the doubt. Was it a smart thing to do? (probably not as it blew up in their face) but I don't think it was this huge sign of disrespect that everyone says it was. Enjoy the gold medal and don't worry about what the American team to get motivated.

Canada Gripped by Severe Strain of Hockey Fever It is incredible to watch people rally around Team Canada. It is a lot of fun. Around Lakeview Church today, the church will stop during the Canada-Belarus game. I look forward to it. I remember going to a Canada Cup came in 1981 with my Dad to the old Calgary Coral. Canada was playing the CCCP. We had standing room only seats and I remember chanting "Let's Go Canada! Let's Go!" till my voice was shot. When I was in Ottawa for the installation of Canada's Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn, the coolest part of the gala ball was not meeting the ex-Prime Ministers or the ambassador's. It was seeing the Canada Cup in one of the rooms. I guess I have hockey fever too.

Are churches and political candidates crossing a line?
Several local churches in Saskatoon are hosting Stockwell Day. I wonder what message it sends to other people in your congregation that vote for another Alliance candidate or are Tory, Liberal or NDP? Again it just feels like that the church is saying, if you don't think like me in another way, you aren't welcome. I am glad that Lakeview Church has decided to stay decidedly non-political. We have enough work to do in sharing the Gospel, we don't need to be selling political party memberships.

Then again I use the New Living Translation so what do I know... I think this quote from the article sums up my position, "The controversy surrounding the latest translation is hardly new. In the past 50 years, as scholarship and archeological discoveries have increased, scores of different English-language versions have been published - each with its own set of adherents and detractors."

Business 2.0 - Web Article - Weblogs Make the Web Work for You

In time most weblogs will probably disappear. Like Tamagotchis, many are just techie toys that confer some short-term prestige but require lots of care and feeding over the long run. Weblogs that aren't updated every day quickly lose their audiences; keeping your blog fresh and relevant takes a lot of work. (Trust me on this one -- I ran a weblog from 1999 to 2000 but discontinued it when I realized I was spending hours every day working on the thing.)

I disagree with the above paragraph, weblogging isn't that hard, especially with tools like Blogger Post...

My Gripes About The House Church Movement
by Andrew Jones - Article on TheOOZE

House Church: What's Cool ?
Seating - comfortable
Bathroom Proximity - always close
Music - if its a multi-room party
No sermon - teaching is interactive
DIY Potential - anyone can do it
Size - small is intimate
Cuisine - bring on the love feast
Freedom of Movement - room-floating encouraged
Security - less likely a bomb target
Speed - It could happen tonight

What's Lame ?
Seating - no back pew to hide on
Bathroom Proximity - everyone notices
Music - if its an attempt at Kum-By-Ya
No sermon - if you're are a preacher
DIY Potential - if you want to be a paid professional
Size - small is bad for babe-scouting
Cuisine - No more pot-lucks in the church hall
Freedom of Movement - expect to be interrupted by the dog
Security - who took my CD's?
Speed - it could happen tonight in your house

This came from a really cool article on house churches from Andrew Jones...

I am kind of glad to see the Czech Republic gone from the tourement, the Dominator can steal entire games. It is funny how a one game elimination tournement and anything can happen. Look at 98. If that was a 5 or even 3 game series, Canada would have won but the Czech Republic won (and deservably so). This is what makes the Olympics so interesting... Let's hope Canada gets by Finland!

Okay, about that Team Canada link on the main page. I have gotten a load of e-mail about it. Some people feel it is inappropriate for this site to be linking to a "blatantly nationalistic site" as it was described by a certain American critic. Let me just say this. jordoncooper.com is run by me, Jordon Cooper. I am a huge hockey fan and have played competetive hockey since I was 5. Hockey Canada made my life very enjoyable. While I never had the skill to play pro, I think that Hockey Canada taught me a lot of things.

I also enjoy the Olympics and am cheering for Team Canada for the simple reason that I AM CANADIAN. This site is not just a site of ministry resources but also my personal site and it reflects a large part of who I am.

I would hope that my nationality and my preference to win in hockey don't diminish the value the resources on this site but if they do, there are other sites for you to look at.

From Yahoo! "The Edmonton Oilers netminder surrendered three bad goals, including the winner by Vladimir Kopat with just over two minutes remaining, sinking the torpedo dead in its tracks. Kopat's slapshot from just inside center ice glanced off Salo's facemask and trickled into the net."

I am not a big Edmonton Oilers fan but you have to feel for Tommy Salo. I have let in bad goals that have cost my team a win. It feels horrible. To let in three bad goals, that is something I wouldn't wish on anyone, especially when you are favorites for the Olympic gold medal. I hope Tommy bounces back!

Charities Say No to Obsolete Crap Tell me about this. Lakeview has loads of "obsolete crap". Decade old 486's don't run much of anything anymore. At the same time, the reason we accept it is that we can't afford new boxes so you are caught using it. I think that NGO's need to have a little more creativity than in this article. Some time on eBay or using New Deal Inc's new office suite are alternatives to throwing away needed computers.

My Gateway Handbook is a 486. It goes online, runs Office 4.2 and does everything that I need it to do.

Gen-X drawn to mix of old and new worship styles

"Something is definitely beginning to happen, and God is doing something new," said Dieter Zander, founder of ReImagine, a non-profit evangelism/church-planting group in San Francisco. "What's going on seems odd to the church because it's outside the lines of what the church has been doing." But several observers insist that even the most traditional of churches can't afford to ignore this blend of ancient traditions and today's technology.

Zoometry: Survival Is Not Enough by Seth Godin I really liked Godin's newest book. I keep seeing the church making the same mistakes that he credits business's with.
