It’s Wendy again and I am pretty lucky as Jordon does all of the Christmas shopping in our family and over the years he has created some incredible gift guides for his website which have generated a loyal following. I traditionally write the Gift Guide husbands/boyfriends/fathers and this year I get to kick off the festivities as mine will go first. How cool is that? Hopefully I don’t disappoint and as always if you have good ideas, leave them in the comments below.

Leatherman New Wave Multitool | Last year Lee went out and bought Jordon a nice multi-tool and he has used it every day since then. It’s amazing how many times it has come in handy around the house or when we have been out driving or at the lake. It’s been used to fix the car, perform first aid, cut down a tree, screw in more than one screw, and open many a package. You really don’t realize how handy and indispensible they are until you don’t have one around. We have picked up some less inexpensive ones over the years and we keep one in both of our car safety kits and also up at the cabin. If the guy you are shopping for doesn’t have one, get him one.

iPod Touch | If the guy you are shopping for has an iPhone then don’t bother but if he has an Android or Blackberry powered phone, don’t buy into the hype that they can listen to music with it. They can but you can’t use iTunes and it’s a big time drain on the battery. Get them a 4th generation iPod Touch and let them put their videos and music on it. For Jordon, his iPod has many of the same apps that his phone does, it means that he can grab it any time he needs it, even if his phone is out of reach or charging. Plus no matter how easy people tell you it is to get music on your Android or Blackberry, iTunes makes it easier. While it won’t replace your HD camcorder, there was been a lot of times when we have it with us and it takes excellent HD video. Photos are generally grainy but the video is good to excellent.

Seinheisser CX 500-B headphones | Whatever you do, upgrade his headphones. The Apple headphones may be iconic but they aren’t very comfortable. Instead try the CX 500’s which are high quality, noise-isolating ear-canal phones with a crisp, clear, bass driven stereo sound. They feature a volume control integrated in the cable and come with a new, unique type of ear adapter for an improved fit and an even better passive noise attenuation.

Kindle Fire/Kobo Vox | If a iPad is out of your price range and you don’t want a Blackberry Playbook (not many of us do), why not look at an Android powered Kindle Fire or if you are in Canada, check out the Kobo Vox. They aren’t iPads but they are not $500 either. They allow you to install apps, read books, watch some video, install apps surf the web, play Angry Birds, tweet, and check email easily.

Which one should get? Amazon has a faster tablet while the Kobo Vox is available in Canada. There have been some pretty annoying issues with the Kobo Vox as Kobo has a reputation of shipping before it it is ready. They have however released five firmware updates which means that the Vox is getting better with each release.

Steve Jobs by Walter Issacson | Read the summary and tell me that the tech geek in your life won’t want to read this. Plus, after he is done with it, you can read it.

It’s more than the acting and the writing, it’s the concept of dedicating an entire season to one story and crime and letting it unfold. I have watched the entire series twice with Jordon and it gets better wit age. I really is worth watching and owning. It would be a fantastic gift to any man on your Christmas gift.

Ken Burns: Prohibition | Well let’s see you have Ken Burns telling the story of prohibition so you have gangsters, smugglers, corrupt cops, good cops, and a government that was comfortable actually poisoning alcohol to keep it from being consumed. Yeah, this is going to be a good documentary series.

Mad Men | Jordon got into Mad Men last Christmas and while advertising isn’t my passion, I have come to really enjoy the series. It’s also reassuring that someone, somewhere is making television worth watching again.

Tivoli Model One | Old school AM/FM in a timelessly sleek design. I bought Jordon one a couple of years ago and he loves it. We actually went and bought a second one for the cabin. It gets great reception in the middle of nowhere and on a hot summer day when the Saskatchewan Roughriders are playing, it’s a great way to listen on the deck with all of your friends. The Tivoli Model One has a rich, full sound thanks to sound pioneer Henry Kloss, and the radio has come to be a modern design must-have. This gift is perfect for a desk, in the kitchen- anywhere he can listen to the baseball game, CBC Radio One, or the oldies station. Another tabletop option worth considering is the classic Sangean WR-11 radio. Different design but same classic look.

Wooden Pocket Knife | Jordon’s grandfather carried a wooden pocket knife with him his entire life. Today while in Eddie Bauer he was surprised to see a great looking wooden pocket knife for sale. Eleven functions in one beautifully crafted tool: scissors, fish scaler, hook remover, reamer with sewing eye, can opener, Phillips screwdriver, bottle opener, flathead screwdriver, small blade, and large blade.

MI5 | I fell in love with this long running BBC series along with Jordon. This is adult, post-watershed drama clearly inspired by the hard-hitting style of shows as 24 and The Sopranos. I have never seen a show so willing to kill off major characters but the one that remains (Harry) pulls show all together. It’s a lot of fun, action packed and even controversial.

Defend the Realm: The Authorized History of MI5 by Christopher Andrew | I bought this book for Jordon tis summer and he really enjoyed it. It’s not a light read as it is a scholarly history of MI5 but it is readable and incredibly interesting. I found myself fascinated by some of the stories he would read from it as well as the personalities of the people behind the vaunted intelligence agency. If you loved one is a fan of history, you can’t go wrong with this book.

The Power Broker by Robert Caro | Both the postman and myself got hernias when this book was delivered. It is 1344 pages and a Pulitzer Prize winner about Robert Moses. Who was Robert Moses? Well he was the urban designer that changed the face of New York City and much of New England forever. His car centric urban design probably influenced how we live more than anyone else. He was feared, hated, and admired all at the same time. Just as it’s a book about Moses, it’s a biography of New York City. This book is coming out as a movie (or a long mini-series) next year. Read the book first.

Sergio: One Man’s Fight to Save the World by Samantha Power | I haven’t read it yet but Jordon said it was the best book he read in 2010. The book is about Sergio Vieira de Mello’s who was a Brazilian United Nations diplomat who worked for the UN for more than 34 years, earning respect and praise around the world for his efforts in the humanitarian and political programs of the UN. He was killed in the Canal Hotel Bombing in Iraq along with 20 other members of his staff on 19 August 2003 while working as the Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Iraq. While the book was quite compelling, it has also been made into a HBO movie.

Survivorman: The Complete Series | A couple of years ago Jordon was surfing the television and stumbled upon Les Stroud surviving a week in Alaska and all of us got hooked on the show. We own all three seasons (Season 1, 2, 3) but you can get the entire series in one box from Less Stroud’s online store. If you are interested in the cultures Stroud interacted with on the show, make sure you check out the complete series of Beyond Survival

Tabletop fountain | It depends on the office environment that your husband works in. At the Salvation Army Community Services, Jordon’s office was both too hot and too dry. A tabletop fountain added some humidity into the air and cooled it down a bit. Just make sure you get him a plug in version, not one that runs on batteries. It’s one of those things that once the batteries run out, it never gets used again.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 | I never bought Jordon video games but he has made a sacred vow never to let Mark beat him at a game and so every once in a while Jordon takes a couple of days and beats a game. This year he beat Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Battlefield: Bad Company, and Call of Duty: World at War and InFamous for the Playstation 3. While he talks of the sacred vow, deep down he does it to escape and unwind. If Jordon was creating this list, he would add Infamous 2 and Battlefield 3 to the list. Depending on how old the game is, you can get them for a really good deal.

Kodak Zx5 Playsport | Jordon is a big fan of is Kodak Zi8 camera but Kodak isn’t making them any longer and has instead brought out the Zx5 Playsport. It’s ruggedized, water proof (even has underwater white balance and shoots stunning video). While we have a camcorder, you would be amazed at the amount of time we shot great video with our Kodak because we had it with us.

Creative Vado | The third generation of the Creative Vado may not be ruggedized but does have an external microphone port which means that with a lavalier or a shotgun microphone, you are going to get much better audio than you would with most standard camcorders. Not only is the price right but along with Kodak Playsport, it offers up a wide variety of video options as well.

Christmas Gift Ideas for Really Smart People (2010 Edition)

You need a gift for someone smart, someone who wants to know about everything – what happened, how it works, why it all got started. Fortunately, the globally curious have a lot of hobbies which makes them kind of easy to shop for, even if you don’t always remember to sleep and eat. Below are some ideas for the smart people in your life. If you are looking for something not so elitist, check out my other Christmas Gift Guides.

Sangean WR-11 AM/FM Table Top Radio :: CBC Radio and NPR sounds so much more profound coming from a wooden radio. Speaking from personal experience, there is something about sitting around a radio on a hot summer day, sipping iced tea, while reading a good magazine.

Your own personal card cataloging system :: It seems like book thieves are everywhere these days. Even your closest friends will try to keep your rare, out-of-print novels if you don’t keep an eye on them. And no one really wants to pay $60 for another one. Thankfully, there now is a solution to your book-losing woes. The Personal Library Kit provides everything you need for keeping track of books, and an eye on those shameful book thieves. Of course card cataloging your books is only half the battle, keeping them organized is the second half. Sure you could use LibraryThing but check out this old school way of keeping your cards organized.

Amazon Kindle with Wifi | I wasn’t convinced that I needed or wanted an Amazon Kindle until the Kindle 3 came out. First of all the hardware is amazing; one month of battery life, wifi, built in web browser, support for Instapaper… The other reason is that you don’t even need a Kindle to read Kindle books…Amazon has readers for the iPad, iPhone, Android devices, Blackberry, WinPhone 7, Windows, and OS X. It has killer multi-platform support. A subscription to City Journal | City Journal is a quarterly magazine that focuses on urban policy. Although the magazine is based in New York City, it covers issues of national scope. It’s has a fiscally conservative point of view but chances are that whoever you are shopping for can figure that out by themselves. $23 for four issues.

Sergio: One Man’s Fight to Save the World by Samantha Power | This is the best book I read in 2010. The book is about Sergio Vieira de Mello’s who was a Brazilian United Nations diplomat who worked for the UN for more than 34 years, earning respect and praise around the world for his efforts in the humanitarian and political programs of the UN. He was killed in the Canal Hotel Bombing in Iraq along with 20 other members of his staff on 19 August 2003 while working as the Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Iraq. While the book was quite compelling, it has also been made into a HBO movie. The book is $5.17 on Amazon.com and the DVD is available for $19.98 (in DVD-R format)

Homicide: A Year in the Killing Streets by David Simon | Another one of my favourite books of 2010. David Simon, who was a reporter for The Baltimore Sun, spent four years on the police beat before taking a leave of absence to write this book. He had persuaded the Baltimore police department to allow him unlimited access to the city’s homicide unit for calendar year 1988, and throughout that year he shadowed one shift of detectives as they traveled from interrogations to autopsies, from crime scenes to hospital emergency rooms. Baltimore recorded 234 murders during the year Simon spent with the homicide unit. During the two years he spent writing Homicide, an additional 567 murders occurred.

Kodak Zi8 Video Camera | In case they are more interested creating content rather than just watching it, look at getting them a Kodak Zi8 camera. It has a microphone jack which means that you can easily add an external 1/8 microphone for even better sound. It’s Wendy and I keep telling Jordon that he needs to stop leaving the password for his blog login laying around and he never listens to me. As he said, “Bill Clinton lost the nuclear launch codes and nothing bad happened.” Well what happened is that I am posting a gift guide for what to get the men in your life. Hopefully this post meets the requirements of the JordonCooper.com Style Guide.

What do you give to someone who spends his day working in a non-profit and then comes home every night to take care of the boys? I had Jordon give me a few suggestion which I combined with a few ideas of my own.

32 gb iPod Touch | Jordon being the geek that he is, bought a 1G iPod Touch as soon as they came out. He has sat out the last two upgrades but now the iPod Touch has a new high resolution screen, camera, and Facetime. Even I can see it’s time to upgrade and get him a new one. The iPod Touch is a music player, gaming platform, video player, and a Personal Information Manager. Jordon carries his with him each day. If your loved one doesn’t have a smartphone, he will love one of these.

Sony PSP 3000 / PSP Go | Lee bought Jordon a PSP a couple of years ago and Jordon loves it. While he was devastated that NCAA Football 11 or the Force Unleashed II are not being released for the PSP, there are still a bunch of good games to play and toss in as additional gifts. The Kindle also works well with Instapaper, RSS feeds, and can access the web. While it’s not a iPad, it’s not just a book reader either. One of the things that pushed Jordon towards wanting a Kindle was it’s support for major newspapers like;

5.1 Channel Surround Sound System | This one works with seven different audio sources (for those of you who need hook ups for your PS3, TV, Wii, stereo, computer and whatever geek devices they fancy). If you have never watched a movie with 5.1 channel surround sound, you have no idea what you are missing. It’s a gift everyone in the family with thank you for getting. The Wire | Season 1 ($30)| Season 2 ($30) | Season 3 ($30) | Season 4 ($30) | Season 5 ($30) | Complete Series ($105) | For Father’s Day we went out and bought Jordon a portable DVD player and Season One of The Wire and was blown away by how good the series is. It is by far the greatest television show that I have ever watched on television and I was sad when it ended. I could go on but Jason Kottke has devoted so much energy blogging The Wire over the last couple of years, I’ll send you there. I’ll give you a warning though, this is not a series you will watch with anyone under the age of 16. It is brutally violent, offensive language and the occasional sex scene. Survivorman | Hand Made Fire Piston | A fire piston, sometimes called a fire syringe, is a device of ancient origin which is used to kindle fire. It uses the principle of the heating of a gas (in this case air) by its rapid compression to ignite a piece of tinder, which is then used to set light to kindling. Jordon and Mark enjoy learning different fire making methods at the lake (which often fail and they default to matches). $80 from Les Stroud Productions.

Snowshoes and Solitude :: We are a big fan of the show Survivorman around the house but one of the questions I always have is how we he do if his isolation lasted longer than 7 days. According to some friends who have seen the DVD, Snowshoes and Solitude goes a long way in answering that question and I am told it is worth watching and owning. $19.99 from Les Stroud Productions

Jordon is a fan of fine watches and while some of them are totally unaffordable, this Paris Mechanical Pocket Watch from Charles Hubert is fantastic looking. It’s a sleek, silver-tone update of a classic style which combines 17-jewel mechanical movement with a skeleton dial. Shopping for Wendy has always been hard. She never gives me any ideas and the ideas that she does give me are things that two days later she no longer wants. For all of you who are married or dating someone who is hard to shop for, here is the list of Christmas gift suggestions for your wife or girlfriend. You can thank me later.

Amazon’s Kindle | If your wife/girlfriend/mom is an avid reader, how about getting her a Kindle? If you are undecided on whether or not you should be leaving paper for e-ink, check out this balanced review from a diehard book lover who fell in love with his Kindle. The new version is smaller, lighter, has Wifi and a higher contrast screen. One of the reasons it’s such a great gift is that your loved one doesn’t have to have it with them to still benefit from owning it. Amazon has readers for the iPad, iPhone, Android devices, Blackberry, WinPhone 7, Windows, and OS X. The killer feature here is Amazon’s multi-platform support. You can start a book on your Kindle, pick up a couple of pages here and there on your phone, and sneak a couple more pages on your desktop computer on coffee break. It even keeps track of what page you are on (across different machines and platforms). The best book is the one that’s always with you. It’s available at Amazon.com for $139.00.

Bose Wave Music System :: The famous Wave music system still sets the standard for quality audio and ease of use among one-piece, table top stereos. Its award-winning design adds a touch of distinction to almost any room. No wonder so many people use it as their main home entertainment system. Numerous reviews speak of the Bose Wave’s clarity and amazing room filling sound. If you are looking for the best all in one unit, this is the one you are looking for. If you are thinking of adding the CD changer, you may want to check out the numerous negative reviews on Amazon.com before picking one up. You can pick up the Bose Wave Music System at Amazon for $495.

While Wendy looks amazing, living in Saskatchewan can be a challenge. Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar skin care products have a cult following and will help hydrate skin in even the driest climates. This air-whipped, therapeutic moisturizer has been described by Philosophy founder Cristina Carlino as, “like pouring a glass of water into my skin. That sounds unhealthy to me but apparently that is a good thing.

HP Mini 210 Netbook | It does a good job of running Windows 7 Basic, the HP Mini 210 lets you surf the web, stay connected, and be entertained wherever you go. Take just what you need And leave the rest on your primary PC. At less than one inch thin and starting at just 2.69 pounds, It comes with a 16:9 10.1″ diagonal BrightView Infinity display and nearly full-size keyboard. $307 and available at Amazon or for $359 at Future Shop.

iPod Shuffle | It has 2 GB capacity for about 500 songs and you can play up to 15 hours on a single charge. With a press of the VoiceOver button, you can hear the song’s title and artist, playlist menu, or battery status. You can get one at Amazon for $50.

Sennheiser CX300-B In-Ear Stereo Headphone | While the iPod comes with Apple’s iconic headphones, you really will want to upgrade those to something with better sound quality and that feels better in your ears. While not their top of the line headphones, they are a big upgrade over both the Apple headphones and most other in-ear headphones. $25 and available at Amazon.

Belkin Dock with USB Wall Charger for iPod | If you have a stereo that you really like and don’t want to replace it with a Bose Wave or another stereo system, add an iPod dock to your system that allows easy playing of your music while charging it at the same time. We have one at the cabin plugged into a compact stereo and it works great and makes sure all of our iPod’s are charged up for the drive home.

Wendy and I have been married for 13 years and I still hate buying things for the house without her feedback. Despite that, I am going to go out on a limb and recommend the KNUBBIG lamp from IKEA. It gives a room a soft mood light and since each is mouth blown glass; each lamp is unique. $18.99

Tetris Party for Nintendo DS | I bought Wendy a Nintendo DS last year and she really enjoyed it. Of course the definitive Nintendo game (going back to the Nintendo Gameboy) is probably Tetris and it will give your loved one something to do when you have parked yourself in front of NFL Redzone.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks | This game was suggested to me by several people who grew up playing Legend of Zelda and love the latest incarnation for the Nintendo DS. It is an action/adventure game for the Nintendo DS and DSi that sets Link, the iconic hero of the Legend of Zelda series, on a daring new adventure. The game provides players with a new story, more puzzles, a new mode of transportation–by train–and a new companion in combat, the Phantom. Brain Age and Brain Age 2 for the Nintendo DS | These two games were given to Wendy for her birthday and Christmas last year and she been frustrated by them all year. Brain Age is inspired by the research of Dr. Ryuta Kawashima, a prominent Japanese neuroscientist. His studies evaluated the impact of performing certain reading and mathematic exercises to help stimulate the brain.

Apple iPod Touch | I gave a 3G iPod Touch to Wendy last year for her birthday and she loved it. While it was a great iPod Touch, the new version is even better. See friends while you talk to them with FaceTime. Shoot, edit, and share stunning HD video. Play games against friends, or unknown foes, with the new Game Center. And do it all on the Retina display–the highest-resolution screen on any mobile device. Available at Amazon.com for $223.

Samsung Link | Wendy has a horrible record with cell phones. She leave it turned off, forgets to charge it, never takes it with her. In other words I was playing for a pretty much useless cell phone. After losing her cell phone this summer, I went out and bought her a Samsung Link/Samsung Freeform and she started to carry it with her, had it turned on, and used it all of the time. The QWERTY keyboard makes it really easy to text and the 1.3 megapixel camera is fun to have along and grab photos of the boys or just take some photos while up at the lake.

Saskatchewan Roughriders Ladies Jersey | You can personalize the jersey with your choice of name and number. Using laser cut name and numbers system the Riders can customize the jersey you’ve been wanting. This system is used in several NFL, NHL and MBL stadiums. Same fonts and colors used by the team. Holga Bent Corners 35mm Camera | If who you are shopping for is a photography fan, go old school and get her a modern Holga 35mm flash-less camera that takes the same vibrant-colored, dreamy high-contrast photos as the original, medium-format 120mm Holga – with totally dramatic vignetting and the ease of 35mm film that can be processed anywhere (the film size also means fully panoramic shots). Ork Posters | If you or the target of your affections lives in Toronto, Vancouver, Boston, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, and Seattle among others. They are $22 a poster which makes them a pretty cool value. Of course they don’t have one of either Brandon, Manitoba or Georgetown, Guyana which makes them pretty much useless for Wendy but maybe you will have some better luck.

If the person that you are shopping for is starting to take a look into the world of DSLRs and has outgrown her existing camera, check out Sony’s a320 camera. It’s an entry level DSLR and is only $349 from Future Shop. It’s Sony’s smallest and lightest Alpha DSLR camera. It features a 10.2MP sensor, a large 2.7″ Clear Photo LCD, built-in SteadyShot inside image stabilization, and Creative Style settings that let you bring your shooting to the next level. This kit includes a versatile 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 SAM zoom lens. $349 from Future Shop.

I hesitate to post this because for the life of me I can’t see why one would need one but Wendy loves it. It’s a Sunbeam Tea Drop Hot Tea Maker which accommodates both bagged and loose tea. $58.95 from Amazon. While it doesn’t steep the tea, it does give you a fair amount of control over the strength of tea. If you are looking for a tea maker that does steep the tea, check out the Adagio Teas Electric 32-Ounce Tea Maker. This maker does it all – heats water, steeps leaves, and keeps tea warm so you may enjoy it all day long. Variable timer and temperature control lets you adjust the strength of an infusion, ensuring a perfect cup of tea each time. Works well with all tea varieties.

Straight from Ned Flander’s Leftorium, the MEC Left Handed Slingpack. Wendy has had a slingpack for years and just about jumped for joy when I told her that there was a left handed version available. She may have actually wept a tear or two. $21 from MEC

Pelican 1050 waterproof case :: These are great camera/GPS/iPod cases. They are water proof, padded, floatable, and strong enough to take a lot of abuse in the back of your trunk or any backpack. While you may not use it when you head to the park, you will use them when you are packing for a trip and don’t want your iPod, camera, or phone to be crushed. They are pretty much indestructible which means that of all of the things you have to worry about, this isn’t one of them.

Leatherman Wave Multitool with Leather Sheath :: The most popular full-size Leatherman tool has been upgraded with larger knives, stronger pliers, longer wire cutters and all-locking blades. Not only is Mark a big fan of the show but Wendy has become quite a fan as well, which around here is the entire television viewing family.

If you going outside, go out in comfort with Reebok’s ZigTech shoes. In case you want to take some photos while you are out in the wild, you will want a Camera Pod. I recently ordered one and have come to love it. Despite being made in Canada, Amazon.com won’t ship them here and so you can order them from Les Stroud Productions or get them from The Pod.ca. If you are in the United States, you can get them from Amazon.com. You may also be interested in this Pedco Lightweight Camera Tripod.

Bushnell BackTrack GPS | The Bushnell Backtrack- Never Get Lost Again with the easiest to use personal location finder for around $50. Just mark the location and BackTrack will help you get back. Use it at the mall and stadium parking lots, at the festival, the park, for travel or your next outdoor adventure. Wired has a quick real world review. Wendy, Mark, and Oliver gave me one for my birthday and we have used it several times while out for hikes at the lake. While it won’t show you the best route from point a to point b, it will give you the piece of mind that you will get back home safely and there is a lot of value in that. The other thing is that it doesn’t replace trailblazing, map reading, and orienteering.

Jetboil Flash Personal Cooking System | The Jetboil Flash cooking system utilizes the same efficient design as the now classic Personal Cooking System (PCS) but adds the additional convenience feature of an external temperature indicator. Designed to capture and focus heat more efficiently than traditional cooking systems, the Flash brings two cups of water to a boil in only two minutes. The Game by Ken Dryden | I know I broke up with hockey last year but this was written during the golden age of hockey and the Montreal Canadiens dynasty of the 1970s. It was named by Sports Illustrated in 2002 as one of the Top Ten in The Top 100 Best Sports Books of All Time. Christmas gift ideas for your tween boy | 2010 edition

Mark is now ten which makes him officially impossible to buy Christmas gifts for. He is too old for kids stuff and too young for adult things. We have tossed around hundreds of ideas for Mark and here are a bunch of ideas that we thought could make your Christmas shopping a little easier this year.

I don’t know what is the right age to get your son a cell phone is. If you think this is the year, check out this Samsung m330 through Virgin Mobile. Virgin has a $10/month plan that offers 100 anytime minutes and for $5 more, you can get 100 texts. It has a camera phone, takes videos and is small enough to slip into their pocket. A tip from a friend of mine: To keep your kids from burning through their minutes, he made it mandatory that their phone was active if they wanted to go out. With that rule, they rationed their minutes like it was a precious commodity. $60-$70 (with no contract) at Best Buy / Future Shop / Virgin Mobile / Walmart.

A lot of gift guides this year will be touting a PS3, a XBox 360, a PSP, or a Wii and for good reason. There are a lot of really good games out there for all of those systems. They don’t get the same kind of attention but have you thought about giving a H0 Scale train set or a slot track race track.

While we are talking about H0 scale trains, Model Power has a starter set (power unit, 36” circle of track, and four cars) for about $50. The enjoyable part about a H0 scale train set is that there are thousands of accessories and different pieces that can be added for years to come.

If your kid is a reader (and even if he isn’t), you will want to check out the stories of Obi-Wan Kenobi / Darth Vader / Luke Skywalker by Ryder Windham. With most boys being Star Wars fan (and who isn’t), you may want to check out these biographies of some of the main characters in the Star Wars saga. While you are looking at books, don’t forget the classics. I bought Mark a copy of The Hobbit this summer and he was enthralled by such an old school book. Don’t forget The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In other words there were great books before J.K. Rowling invented Harry Potter.

Go Amp Gaming Amplifier | If the target of your affections is a gamer, here is a fun addition to his Sony PSP or Nintendo DS and is a good way to get some better sound out of your portable gaming system. It’s a small portable amp that plugs into the headphone jack on your portable game system and does a good job of increasing the volume of any game system. Since First Act knows it’s target audience is hard on batteries, it turns on & off automatically when headphone jack inserted or removed. $3 at XS Cargo of you can purchase at $40 from Amazon.

Polaroid a200 Digital Camera | This camera is an entry level camera for first time photographers. For years I have passed down my digital cameras to Mark and what I found is that he never used the zoom or any of the other advanced features. That being said, neither did I which is why my Kodak point and click with it’s 110 film was so much fun. It personified point and shoot.

The camera has 8MB of internal storage which allows you to store 120 images or video for $30. The bad part of the camera is that it’s internal memory is wiped if the batteries run out and it doesn’t have a lens cover which means you will always be fighting smudges and dust on the lens. Then again it is a $30 camera. Pick it up at Amazon

Polaroid DVF-130RC Digital Camcorder | We gave Mark a compact digital video camcorder last Christmas and he has loved it. Over the last year we have given several others out as gifts and the recipients have really liked them. It’s a point and shoot camera that captures VGA quality video at 30 fps. Yeah that isn’t HD quality but with most of us sharing digital video via Facebook and YouTube more and more often, the lack of HD isn’t as big of issue. It’s got 16MB of built in memory so you will want to make sure to toss in a SD card in along with it. In most places you can get anywhere from a 2GB to a 8GB card for under $10.

While I am not an avid golfer, I enjoy the game and so does Mark. The City of Saskatoon makes it affordable for parents to go golfing at Silverwood Golf Course. Now while Silverwood is a nice short golf course by itself, it is designed for beginner golfers and during the summer has several specials that make it even easier to take a younger golfer along with you. Mark’s clubs were bought second hand but it’s fun to add a new putter, a package of golf balls, or even some golf gloves to the mix. Now the best part about golfing with Mark is not the golf game but the two or three hours we have talking about life, cracking jokes, and enjoying a snack afterwards.

Speaking of sports, Wilson has a great junior sized football which is quite a bit easier to throw and catch then a full sized CFL, NCAA or NFL football. not only is the ball a little lighter, it is designed for kid sized hands so when they through it, they can get a spiral with it. Not only is it good for them, it is good for you as it makes it easier to through the deep post and look good while doing it.

GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra for Wii | I know GI Joe was cooler when I was a kid but this is the version that kids these days have now. You can choose from twelve G.I. JOE characters, each with unique weapons and abilities, and unlock additional COBRA characters. It’s a fun adventure game and will give him hours of fun in front of the Wii.

Mario Kart for Wii | While you can play Mario Kart by yourself, where it gets to be even more fun is when you have the entire family racing each other. Of all of the video games we have as a family, none gets all of us playing together like this one.

iPod Shuffle | It has 2 GB capacity for about 2000 songs and you can play up to 15 hours on a single charge. With a press of the VoiceOver button, you can hear the song’s title and artist, playlist menu, or battery status. Available from Amazon. A far cheaper 2 GB option is this MP3 Player from Nextar. It comes with a small clip on it making it perfect to hang off a lanyard for safe keeping.

Season 1 | Season 2 | Season 3 of Survivorman | Mark (and the rest of us) is a huge fan of the show and it’s a perfect way to spend a cool winter night watching Les Stroud spending seven days in some of the harshest climates known to man without food, water or shelter. He’ll watch them again and again.

If he is already a fan of Surivorman, check out the Survivorman You Sweat You Die T-Shirt | The back of each t-shirt is printed with “You Sweat you Die” and Les Stroud’s autograph. While I don’t generally notice tags on the inside of the shirt, this shirt features a great one with washing instructions that include the “will to live”. I love it. So will the kid that you are shopping for. The DVDs and shirt are available from Les Stroud Productions.

Last year I recommended BBC’s epic documentary series Planet Earth. Mark loved it, Wendy loved it, I am sure Oliver loved it. It was great for the entire family. This year BBC has come out with Life and it has the same kind of positive reviews that Planet Earth had. $38 at Amazon.com

Air Hogs Remote Control Helicopter | With the world’s record for the smallest remote-controlled helicopter, the Air Hogs Havoc Heli goes where no other flying object can. They can be safely flown inside the house where their small size and light weight mean that if your pilot in training does make a mistake, both the vase and the helicopter will survive. $30 at Amazon.com

The Wave Original Street Surfer is an inline action board that blends the sensations of surfing, snowboarding and skateboarding. It has a fun design where no foot propulsion is required. Riders simply hop on, twists their hips back and forth in an S-shaped motion to achieve forward movement. It gives riders the ability to perform all sorts of neat tricks because it runs on two wheels rather than four. $90 at Amazon.com.

Magic Igloo Maker | This is only available in Canada and would make for a great Christmas gift anywhere in the country (sans Victoria). It is a specially designed plastic mould that makes interlocking snow blocks to create big, strong, safe igloos easily and quickly! According to the website, a large igloo takes anywhere from 2 to 6 hours to complete (depending on how hard you work. After building it, both body heat and a small candle will cause the snow to melt and the inner surface to harden. While there are not likely to be a lot of predators in your backyard, it will make is stronger an last longer into the spring. $39.99 for two molds.

2010 Christmas Gift Ideas & Gift Guides

Last years I put together what became the most popular feature ever here on JordonCooper.com, the Christmas gift guides. I was stunned how popular they were and as early as September people started to email me and ask if I was going to do them again in 2010. I will be doing them again (and Wendy will write two of them, one for husbands/fathers and one for the hard to buy for brother in law) and actually have a publication schedule. I hope they make your holiday shopping a little easier and somewhat less stressful.

I don’t know what you do for your shopping method but around September we come up with a list of people who we purchase Christmas gifts for. All of those names are put into a AbiWord document and we brainstorm from there. After we come up with our ideas, we come up with our budget. Once the list is culled, we assign a gift to each pay check and just purchase our gifts on schedule. The rule is that Christmas shopping has to be done by November 30th which means that presents are generally wrapped and ready to put under the tree when we put up the Christmas tree on the first week of December.

One of the things that I enjoyed this fall was creating the series of Christmas Gift Idea posts that so many people criticized this fall. While there was some negative comments, the response was overwhelmingly positive from complete strangers who really enjoyed those features and said it made Christmas shopping a lot easier on them.

While creating the guides, for every cool item I posted, there was ten or so that didn’t make the cut. I didn’t really know what to do with it so I thought of creating a shopping section of the site but I didn’t want to clutter up the site that much for regular readers and at the same time, if you are looking for a great watch to buy, you probably don’t care about NFL highlights. In the end I decided to split off another site to shop.jordoncooper.com. For a lack of a better title, here’s introducing Jordon Cooper Outfitters. It’s a weblog that I hope to update five days a week with products, links, and articles designed to inspire you to get out and do stuff, create stuff, or just change make the world better. The Long Emergency by Howard Kunstler :: Kunstler has a remarkable look at what peak oil will mean for western society. Don’t take my word for it, check out this interview in The Morning News and this article over at Rolling Stone before you buy a couple of copies of this book, one for the person you are shopping for, one for yourself, and one to lend to your friends.

Why Your World Is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller: Oil and the End of Globalization by Jeff Rubin :: This is another fascinating look at what the future will look like with higher oil prices. Globalization is powered by cheap oil and without cheap oil, our world, economy, and the way we live is going to go through a massive transition. While a lot of books about economics can be dry and hard to get through. Both the Long Emergency and Why Your World are both very accessible, interesting, and very well written. They will also make for some fascinating discussion over the breakfast table on Boxing Day.

The BLDGBLOG Book by Geoff Manaugh :: What a wonderful book. It’s not just a book about architecture, it’s a book that reimagines what urban spaces can become. The book is more than just text, it is full of fantastic diagrams, graphics, draws, and unbelievable photographs. I read it once for the content and then read it again and just soaked in the photos and graphics – they are that good.

The Lost Massey Lectures: Recovered Classics from Five Great Thinkers by Martin Luther King Jr., John Kenneth Galbraith, Jane Jacobs, and Paul Goodman. In case the person you are shopping for has read those, check out, More Lost Massey Lectures: Recovered Classics from Five Great Thinkers

Speaking of great thinkers, if your loved one hasn’t read A Heretics Guide to Eternity by Spencer Burke and Barry Taylor yet, they really need to. Spencer and Barry received a lot of criticism from some people who were threatened by their ideas but the book offers up an important voice to the conversation about salvation, eternity, and the church. Plus if the person you are shopping for is really that smart, they can handle new ideas.

While I am a fan of paper, have you thought of giving the gift of ebooks with a Amazon Kindle? It’s only 10.2 ounces, lighter than a typical paperback. It downloads books in Under 60 Seconds over the 3G Wireless network. Despite that, you have no annual contracts, no monthly fees, and no hunting for Wi-Fi hotspots. It’s battery can run for one week. You still have to pay per download in Canada but at least we can get it here now.

If you don’t think they want a Kindle, how about Sony’s Digital Touch Reader? By supporting both industry standard formats, ePub and PDF, you can access books at Sony’s eBookstore, check out books from public libraries, access over 500,000 free public domain titles from Google, as well as sharing sites, online aggregators and personal publishers (Internet access is required).

The Complete Collection of National Geographic :: Sure Wikipedia is great but there are things covered in old National Geographics that Wikipedia has never even heard of. While you are at it, have you considered getting a subscription to magazines like The Walrus, The Atlantic, or the New Yorker? How about Architectural Digest, New York Times weekend edition, or something else that will feed their mind and inspire great discussions over coffee?

Mark was given a copy of Planet Earth: The Complete Series by the Reimers for Christmas and he loves it. Not only does Mark love it but so do Wendy and I. Its a series we will watch again and again and harkens back to the days of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom where the entire family gathered around the television to take in the sites and sounds of animals we came to learn a lot about.

I know the commute would be horrible unless you lived in New York City but a membership at Paragraph would be a lot of fun.

Retro Christmas Gift Guide: Toys of Christmas Catalog’s Past

I don’t know if you remember Consumers Distributing but when their catalog came to the house in the 80s, it was chaos as we all went through it to decide what we wanted for Christmas. I don’t know why I was thinking about that today but I remember really wanting some really bizarre stuff for Christmas over the years. In honor of the Ghost of Christmas Catalog Past, here is my list of things that I wanted for Christmas but never, ever got. Some for good reason. Actually all for good reason. If you have any gifts that you wanted as a kid but never got, let me know in the comments.

Tomy Omnibot :: In reality these probably were not that cool but back in the 80s, the promise of real life working robot kept me awake at night just dreaming of the awesomeness. Having just mentioned it now, I won’t be able to sleep tonight just thinking about the awesomeness that I missed out of. I had so many plans for this thing. A couple of years ago Market Mall had a retro toy place in it and one of these things sat in the window. Even as an adult it inspired some retro lust.

Vic-20 :: In grade 4, our teacher at Queensland Downs Elementary School was a bit of a computer geek and our classroom filled up with one Apple II, a bunch of Commodore PETs, an Atari 400 and other computers that we geeked out on. He had a Commodore 64 with a revolutionary floppy drive and gave this lecture once about if we worked hard, got a good education, made good investment decisions and had some luck, we too could afford a Commodore 64. While I had a Commodore 64 later in life (and I loved it), at the time, the Vic-20 was what we played with and I really wanted one. It was actually the star of our class Christmas play (it also crashed during the finale, wrecking everything) You know, after the spring of 1984, I don’t think I ever even saw one, let alone ever used one again.

Speaking of Mr. Taylor’s Grade 4 class, he was the one that brought in a robot into class. I think it was called Adam and it could be programmed to do a couple of things which seemed cool at the time. It probably explains that why I was so fascinated with Mr. Omnibot up there as well.

Timex Sinclair :: These may have been the cheapest personal computers that I have ever seen and I pestered my mom daily for one in 1985. Radio Shack at the Mall of Lawson Heights sold them. I think what sunk my quest to convince mom to get me one was she actually saw how crappy it was. Like Steve Jobs has taught us, the demo is really, really important. Of course if I had a Tomy Omnibot, it could have demoed it for me. For the record, that Christmas I got a Cooper XL7 helmet which despite what everyone said, looked pretty cool in it’s time.

Tony Hawk Skateboard :: Now I had bought a Dominion Firefly skateboard a couple of years earlier. For those of you who remember Dominion Skateboards, they were skateboards sold at Zellers and other big box retailers that were pretty cheap. Looking back at it, it took a lot of abuse and over the years I put some new wheels and trucks on it and it wasn’t a bad board. Of course it wasn’t a Powell Peralta and there was no way I was going to be accepted as a member of the Bones Brigade without one (I also had no really moves but that is irrelevant) A Tony Hawk Skateboard was a long ways out of the budget back in 1987 but I got a great generic skateboard for Christmas that year and with some really great old school stickers and some parts off my old deck, life was good. I was going to skate forever or at least until I discovered high school football. What cracks me up now is that I bought some Tony Hawk biking gloves this summer, Mark plays Tony Hawk games and refuses to accept that Tony Hawk was even alive when I was a kid. 20 years later I am still buying Tony Hawk products. When I am 80 I may be asking for the Tony Hawk Motorized Wheelchair.

GI Joe Skystriker :: I had a lot of GI-Joe toys over the years but I also thought the coolest toy was the F-14 Skystriker. I never ever had one but I had the GI Joe attack helicopter, a missile shooting jeep, the snowmobile, and a couple other really cool vehicles as seen on the page below. A couple of friends of mine had them and we never really played with it, it was like we were in awe of it’s greatness.

Metal Detector :: I totally forgot about this until Mark posted his Christmas wish list, I wanted a metal detector. I am not sure what I was hoping to get. Lawson Heights was still a new neighborhood so the likelihood of buried treasure or even spare change being found was slim but I remember thinking how cool it would be to have one. My grandfather had one so maybe that is where I got my inspiration from.

Sharp Wizard Organizer :: Continuing the computer geek fest, how cool would a pocket computer have been to my life. It included a memo pad, a telephone pad, calendar and scheduling with alarms and repeating events, multi-time zone clocks, and a calculator. I am not sure how useful it would have been in real life as a kid but then again, all of those Palm devices I owned were not that much more useful.

Gateway Handbook 286 :: In high school I was pretty much a nerd (which is different than now how?) and we used to love going through computer magazines as a group of nerds and talk computers. I remember the day when we first saw an ad in Computer Shopper for the Gateway Handbook. It was too expensive (I think it started out at $995 USD when it came out) to ask for but my heart beat a little faster every time I saw an ad for one.

I later owned a Gateway 486 and loved it. In a lot of ways, it was the world’s first netbook but it was before it’s time (and the web).

Selling out for the holidays

I have gotten a lot of feedback for my Christmas Gift Guides. It seems to fall into three categories:

People selling their own books/gadgets/junk who are link baiting.
People accusing me of selling out to rampant commercialism.
People who are happy for the ideas.

Let me explain the context that they are created in.

Wendy and I have a hard cap for Christmas shopping. It has been the same for the first 11 years of our marriage and only this year did it go up by $50 for each of us. We spend about $150 each on each other which includes all of our gifts from the kids as well. The amount works out really well for us.

We spend about $100 on each of the boys and a little more on Lee. We also exchange gifts with some friends who on top of that amount. Shopping around the house starts in September which allows us to take advantage of any sales that come up like weekly loss leaders at Canadian Tire. A the end of the day it allows us to avoid the panic that sets in with too many. On Saturday, I was picking something up for Wendy with Mark and a women actually tried to take our item out of our hands while in line (which both freaked out Mark and the staff of the store who had to escort her out) and it wasn’t even December yet.

Wendy and I create a Google Spreadsheet where we list everyone we plan to buy gifts for and then we start listing ideas. Some of the ideas are horrible but they start as a base for what we need to budget for and also starts a place where we can discuss and revise the list. It’s the countless versions of the spreadsheet is where the gift guides emerge from. The hope is that they serve as gift ideas for others. We decided this year

While quite a few links head to Amazon.com, I link there because I really enjoy shopping from Amazon and because I find their prices are often better than other retailers. I am also partial to linking to MEC because I am a long time member. In case you are wondering, I do also get a portion of sales to Amazon.com and Amazon.ca that my site generates and that is dealt with in this sites disclosure statement. It isn’t a lot of money. Back in 2000, it generated about $200 each quarter but while the sites traffic has grown, the lack of dedicated store has meant that my revenue from Amazon dropped to $10 each quarter. When I do get a gift certificate from them, it means that Mark gets a PS2 or Nintendo DS game. The last thing I am thinking is that I want JordonCooper.com to be an online shrill for affiliate related goods.

Many of my friends have alternative visions of what Christmas is supposed to be. Jason Evans and the Ecclesia Collective has done a really good job with Make Something Day. Mennonites across Canada are behind Buy Nothing Christmas and of course Ad Busters has Buy Nothing Day. All are in some way or another reactions against an overly consumeristic Christmas and I understand where they are coming from. When I was working as a pastor, I heard people talk about spending $5,000 over Christmas and I was shocked until I knew someone who spend over six figures for two consecutive years putting on the perfect Christmas between work and home (a couple of big parties, a couple of big gifts…) which is exactly what people are talking about.

At the same time our annual Christmas spending as a household is under one thousand dollars, we pay for it in cash with no credit card debt at all. Part of the creativity of Christmas is not spending a bunch of money but finding a gift that articulates both who we see they are and what we value about them. It’s why when Oliver opens his gifts, he will find things that Lee and I loved while growing up, it is why when Mark opens his gifts he will find his gifts are things that we will do together, why when Wendy opens her gifts she will find gifts which honor who she is and even the dogs are going to find something that they love (for Maggi is squeaks and needs to be fetched).

Yeah, I could be selling out to the consumeristic machine and encouraging people to commercialize Christmas but my intent is to just share some of the cool stuff that I have seen over the last couple of months in my quest to find some fun gifts for friends, family, and the arch-nemesis on my list. Guest Post: Christmas Gift Ideas for the Brother In Law

This is Wendy and this is what happens when Jordon doesn’t log out of his weblog and leaves me unattended. Since Jordon handles most of our Christmas shopping, I don’t have to spend as much time thinking about Christmas gifts as Jordon does. By far the hardest person to shop for on our Christmas list is my brother in law Lee. Since he is an important part of our family and our Christmas, a great uncle to the boys, and the only family we have, we don’t just go through the motions. So in honor of Lee, here is a list of Christmas gifts for those that are hard to shop for and my contribution to this site’s Christmas Gift Ideas.

Here is Lee’s profile.

He has a PSP Go, PlayStation 3, and a Wii which in some ways gives one some variety in shopping for him for Christmas.
He has an apartment that looks like it should be in Apartment Therapy. It’s almost intimidating buying anything for his apartment. It’s actually intimidating to hang out in his apartment. Of course living in an apartment means that he doesn’t have a lot of storage.
He drives an Acura sports car that is worth 20 times more than my car.
He works hard at Case New Holland in the city which means that he doesn’t have a lot of time for hobbies.

He is Jordon’s brother and an uncle to the boys which means that Lee is an expert shopper himself. He is also a single male so he does things like single males do, when Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare came out, he bought it that day so I guess it means that we aren’t getting that for him.

Star Wars The Clone Wars: The Complete Season One :: The Clone Wars movie was horrible but the series is actually pretty good. Like a lot of animated movies, the series seems to be getting better with the second season but Season One of the Clone Wars is pretty good all by itself.

Air Hogs Dualing Helicopters :: Okay let’s do the math. Remote control + Helicopters + a rather competitive family + the ability to shoot each other down + a big open field at the cabin = a pretty good Christmas gift.

Survive! by Les Stroud :: Since he a) often forgets his cell phone b) often has Mark and Oliver with him, knowledge of some basic survival skills would be quite useful. If he wasn’t over watching the DVDs here, you could give him all three seasons of Survivorman on DVD. You can order them from the Les Stroud Productions store. Season 1 | Season 2 | Season 3. We have all three DVDs and they are a lot of fun to watch. You can also order them from Amazon as well. Season 1 |Season 2 | Season 3. In case you just want to see how Les Stroud survives in the American wilderness, you can order this DVD as well.

Bushnell BackTrack GPS :: Lee will never get lost again with the easiest to use personal location finder for around $50. Just mark the location and BackTrack will help him get back. He can use it at the mall and stadium parking lots, at the festival, the park, for travel or your next outdoor adventure. Wired has a quick real world review and it looks like Cabela’s is one of the few places you can get it in Canada.

The War: An Intimate History by Ken Burns. Jordon read this book this summer and thought it was amazing. He spend hours reading the book but then went back and just soaked in the photos. I don’t think there is such a thing as a good war. There are sometimes necessary wars. And I think one might say, "just" wars. I never questioned the necessity of that war. And I still do not question it. It was something that had to be done. You can also give your favorite in-law the mini series on DVD as well

I can’t see Lee joining the competitive BBQ sub culture but in case he does, here are secrets for success as a professional griller. Whether it’s chicken, ribs, butts or brisket, this cookbook has recipes, directives, insights and guidance on how to slow cook competition-quality meats. Better than any restaurant, these competition and backyard secrets will have beginning barbeque aficionados slow-cooking masterpieces in no time at all. Apple iPod Touch :: I have been pining for one since I started to play around with Jordon’s and it would make a great gift for Lee as well. While Mr. Rider fan is at it, the first thing he can do is go and download the new Rider App for the iPod Touch.

MEC Camo Shoulder Bag :: Since Lee spends some time with us at the cabin, some cool luggage to toss in the back of the car with his gear and clothes are in order. While he is travelling, some custom Saskatchewan Roughriders luggage tags might be a cool stocking stuffer. If you are shopping for someone who does some hiking, don’t overlook the Maxpedition Vulture II backpack.

GPS :: While Jordon is always looking for a trail GPS, I was shocked to see how inexpensive car GPSs have become.

Well the truth is that we are done our Christmas shopping for Lee so my list is all speculation but I thought I would post it to contribute to Jordon’s Christmas Gift Guides and also to help some of you find a fun gift for the hard to shop for in your life. Christmas Gift Guide for the Homeless

This one is pretty close to my heart. At work I get to buy the Christmas gifts for the guys at the Salvation Army Community Centre and I have a lot of fun doing it.

Last year I got them nice duffle bags and a watch/wallet gift set. We also got a big donation of men’s boxer shorts from Wal-Mart and we let the guys sort those out. It was hilarious because there was Simpson’s boxers, Montreal Expos boxers, and other funny boxers. We laid them out in the chapel on Christmas Eve and on Christmas morning there was underwear soaring through the air like fish at Pike’s Market as guys figured out sizes and preferences. I think they got a bigger kick out of the “Saskatoon Gotch Market” than anything that day. Some of the guys had never owned a watch and were in tears.

In the past, we have given out fleece jackets, electric razors, Christmas stockings full of loot, and other bits of clothing.

This year we are going to give out some hoodies (Christmas brought to you by Bill Bilichick but we won’t cut off their sleeves) and a shaving kit full of shaving supplies, toiletries that we don’t keep in stock at the Centre and for the guys who are just passing through, winter survival kits. We are also giving out some leather bound NLT Bibles. (that’s the plan so far but all plans are subject to change)

We get a lot of requests over the holidays about what to get people in the shelter. It’s a tough time for many guys who stay in shelters. Being homeless is a tough experience anytime of the season but even harder at Christmas. I thought I would post a Christmas Gift Guide for those that are homeless and living in a shelter. Take a look and see what you can help with and make Christmas a little nicer for those that live in a shelter.

Simple Luxuries

A couple of years ago someone donated some Old Spice Body Wash. The tagline on it said, “If your grandfather hadn’t worn it, you wouldn’t exist.” which brought a lot of laughs for the guys that we gave it to. From places like Dollarama you can get imitation brands of stuff for $1 and it smells pretty good. Guys love it. If you are so inclined, get them a body scrub puff as well.
We give out free razors at the Centre. The general rule is that when guys say thanks to us for them, we jokingly tell them not to. They are that bad. I have used them once and the screams could be heard for miles. A great luxury is a decent razor. Walmart and most pharmacies have their Gillette Sensor clones with inexpensive replacement blades. Disposable packages of Gillette or Schick razors are awesome as well. If you can toss in some travel packages of shaving cream, all the better.
Towels: No one ever has a towel and we always need more of them to give out. I tend to agree with Dallas Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban that a nice new towel is a wonderful luxury. It’s a big source of frustration with me as some guys tend to demand towels and a towel service but others love them and take care of them. All I know is we can always use more of them. New towels, used towels, you name it.
A nice insulated travel mug with a secure leak proof lid :: One of thing that most people don’t understand is that most of our guys are working and some of them are working in really tough, hard, jobs in the bitter Saskatchewan cold. An insulated travel mug is a prized possession for a lot of guys and something like this Starbucks tumbler would be great. I am not saying that you need to get one of these, I am just saying a mug that won’t spill is a big deal. Dollarama has some stainless steel mugs for $1 but their lids come off pretty quickly but they often have thermoses that would serve the same purpose.
McDonalds or Tim Hortons gift cards. You have no idea how much guys appreciate a Tim Horton’s gift card around the shelter. Gary Smalley could write a book about Tim Horton’s as a love language and it is a comfort food for guys. Now I know a lot of you who read this are in the U.S. but all you have to do is find out what the closest coffee chain is to the shelter. Tim Hortons, Starbucks, or Dunkin’ Donuts… you get the idea.
Long Distance Phone Cards :: Some of the guys at the Centre have no family while others desperately miss theirs over the holidays. This gives them a chance to reconnect. We gave out $5 ones a couple of years ago but they can burn through them pretty quickly.
I saw this hand crank radio the other day while in XS Cargo and I thought it was a great idea for the guys. You crank it up for 30 seconds and it will run for 20 minutes. It also includes some headphones to go along with it so they don’t drive guys around them crazy. While they run on batteries, they don’t need them.
Chocolate/Candy :: I am torn over this one as so many of our clients have diabetes (diagnosed or undiagnosed). Then again I am going to have some candy and chocolate over Christmas so why not? Basically if you like it, someone down at the shelter will like it.

Stuff for Work

In Saskatchewan, you have no idea what a difference that winter work gloves, winter jackets, fleece jackets (dress in layers), and winter coveralls can make. It allows guys who may not have resumes or that extensive of work experience to go down to the day labour places and get some work. Work brings in money but it also allows the guys to prove themselves. Many of the guys in the shelter go out to a day labour place for a couple of days and get hired on by the company who brought them in. A couple of years ago a donation came of winter work clothes, the stuff was given out and two guys found work the next day. Within a short time they were out of the shelter and haven’t looked back since. It’s a big deal. You can toss in travel mugs and thermoses into this category as well. They make working in the cold a lot easier to do.

Necessities of Life

The Centre has soap, shampoo, conditioner, and razors to give away for free. We also have a clothes cave where we can give away clothes that are donated. What we need is underwear (let’s be honest, no one donates underwear for good reason) and socks (who keeps old socks?). We could always use new underwear and socks. In addition, we could always use winter jackets. During my time at the Centre, I have seen so many hitchhikers be brought in totally frozen by the RCMP or city police and the guy is in a jean jacket an that’s it. What is frustrating is that the guys are like, “I’ll just warm up and keep going in –40 weather” while wearing just a jean jacket. Generally we take them to our Clothes Cave and get some warm stuff. Also, you have no idea how many cold kids we see who need something warm in extreme weather. If it warms you up, we will put it to good use.

Reading Material

An easy to read translation of the Bible. Over 50% of our guys at anytime in the Centre are functionally illiterate which makes the KJV translations that the Gideons give out pretty much useless. Guys love the NLT, Message and CEV bibles when they come in and we can give them out. Pocket versions are best as they don’t take up that much space is a pack.
Magazines :: Sports Illustrated, Men’s Health, National Geographic… you get the point.

Don’t Give These Items

Personally I think a multi tool would be great for 97% of our guys and they would really appreciate them but for one or two guys, the damage they would create would be immense and shelters really don’t want knives in them because of the risk they pose.
Computer driven electronics. I know that you can get 1 gig MP3 players for under $10 now but where are they going to get charged up, where are the guys going to get the music. Like us, many shelters really don’t want USB devices plugged into their system because virus concerns and also a lot of guys use them to carry porn along with them. It’s not that I care that much what guys are carrying on their USB devices but I do care when I have a computer full of porn and viruses to deal with.

Christmas Gifts Ideas for Boys Under Two Year of Age

Who would have thought that Oliver would be so hard to shop for. I don’t remember Mark being so hard to shop for when he was a year and a half but then I realized that so many things I wanted to get Oliver are still sitting in storage because we already bought them for Mark. In case you are struggling to find out what to buy a toddler, here is a short Christmas Gift Guide to give you some ideas.

Wooden Sleigh :: We bought on of these for Mark, used it for a couple of years and it still looks like it is brand new. This could conceivably last for 12 kids, even if your marriage couldn’t. While I linked to the cheapest one I could find on Amazon.com, I am pretty sure you can get them a lot cheaper at your local big box outlet. I know quality is important but it’s not as if you are letting your kids go down K2 in one of these things.

Calgary Flames Mini Stick :: Ollie is about the age where hitting things is a lot of fun. The secret it to teach him that it is more fun to hit a ball and a puck than it is to hit Mark and myself. Since we have a dog that loves to fetch, this could be more fun than what we are bargaining for.7

Toy Tool Set :: With the cost of getting repairmen into your home, it’s never to early to teach a child how to fix a furnace or a hot water heater.

Fisher Price Parking Garage :: Right after Henry Ford started to ship the Model T, Fisher Price started to ship the Fisher Price Parking Garage. I had one, Lee had one, I am sure my grandparents had one.

Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Puppy :: Lee gave Oliver one of these for his birthday. It sings, it laughs, it tells jokes, it teaches him things, it drives me crazy. It is currently teaching Oliver the A-B-Cs, 1-2-3′s and parts of the body, plus sing along to ten favorite songs and games. It is also giving him investment tips and putting together a retirement plan for him.

I have a digital camera, Wendy has a digital camera, Mark has a digital camera. Oliver can now have a play camera where he can obsess over the backlighting and the shot as we do with this Playskool play camera. Now of course he is going to find out that the camera we gave him is a toy when his Flickr account doesn’t get that popular but that won’t happen until he is at least three. If you want to spend even more money on a fake video camera, there is this one with Elmo. It doesn’t actually do much but it does it with you kid’s favorite Sesame Street character.

Topeak Alien III Mini Folding Bicycle Tool :: 25 function folding tool with bag will keep you biking all day long, even if your body won’t want you to.

While this cycling computer/GPS by Garmin may be out of your price range, the Cateye Wireless Bicycle Computer displays speed, max speed, average speed, trip distance, 2nd trip distance, total distance, elapsed time, and a clock for a very affordable price with a big screen for easy viewing.

Outdoor Coffee Press :: Now there is no reason to bring that horrible tasting Starbucks Via coffee with you when you go camping or hiking. Instead bring some fresh ground coffee or loose leaf tea with you and make some excellent coffee when ever you want with this outdoor coffee press. In case you have never made coffee with a coffee press, check out the definitive guide to making good coffee by Derek Powazek. Of course you won’t bring a bean grinder with you on most trips but it gives you an idea of what it takes to make a good cup of coffee while on the road. Of course you need something to drink it from. You may want to check out some excellent stainless steel coffee mugs/beer mugs to drink from.

Cammenga Lensatic Compass :: This is the Rolls Royce of compasses. It has been used by U.S. troops, foreign militaries, law enforcement, and special forces for years. A total of seven Tritium light sources provide readability in total darkness for 10 years without external power or the need to “recharge” using a flashlight.

Coleman Aluminum Cookset :: It’s a four piece cookset for under $9 on Amazon.com. They weigh almost nothing and have some good reviews. While they won’t replace your cookware at home. Coleman has a non-stick set as well. If you want something stainless steel, Texsport makes a set for under $14.

I already mentioned this Pathfinder watch from Casio. Is there anything this watch can’t do? It includes a digital compass, altimeter, barometer and thermometer. It’s altitude measurement up to 10,000 meters in the air and 100 meters under water. Another great watch by Casio is quite a bit less expensive is the Casio Men’s Digital Compass Twin Sensor Sport Watch which goes for $50 and has a compass and thermometer. I am still a fan of Timex Atlantis 100 watches which you can give with the stainless steel or the more traditional polyurethane strap. For those of you who are Timex Ironman fans, don’t overlook their latest reincarnation.

Not only is Mark a big fan of the show but Wendy has become quite a fan as well which around here is the entire television viewing family.

While we are talking about Les Stroud and Survivorman, you may want to consider his book, Survive!. While it isn’t on Amazon.com, there is another edition with full color photographs and the ultimate edition comes with a DVD as well but the paperback can be picked up at Amazon.com.

Bushnell BackTrack GPS :: The Bushnell Backtrack- Never Get Lost Again with the easiest to use personal location finder for around $50. Just mark the location and BackTrack will help you get back. Use it at the mall and stadium parking lots, at the festival, the park, for travel or your next outdoor adventure. Wired has a quick real world review and it looks like Cabela’s is one of the few places you can get it in Canada.

The system lights with the click of a button and within two minutes provides two cups of boiling water for cocoa, coffee, instant soup or a gourmet freeze-dried meal. I do most of the Christmas shopping in our house which leaves Wendy to get my gift. I generally update my Amazon.com wishlist and use their universal wish list button to create on central wish list for her and Mark. Our goal is to be done Christmas shopping by December 1st every year and we finished everything up last week so we are good. Since I started posting the Christmas Gift Guides, people have asked me how many things I was asking for Christmas and the answer is I don’t want that many things but here is a short list of things I asked Wendy, Mark, Oliver and Maggi to get me for Christmas. Since they are done their shopping by now, I feel fine in posting this.

A new Swiss Army knife :: I bought one for my groomsmen and myself from MEC 12 years ago and it is showing it’s age and needs to be replaced. This year might be a good year to do it. While I really like my multi-tool, a lot of days, I just want a pocket knife in my front pocket. I still have the worn out pocket knife that my grandfather had and a pocket knife in my pocket not only is handy but reminds me of him.

This is more for the cabin but I thought these dynamite fire starting sticks from Cabelas were a lot of fun. Though the contents of this sturdy wood crate will not move mountains, they will start your fireplace. One look at the realistic “dynamite” crate will have family and friends looking twice. Each cedar wood crate contains 20 fire-starter sticks. They are made of paraffin and sawdust for a long, hot burn. Each stick will burn approximately 30 minutes setting ablaze even the most stubborn wood. Plus, Cabelas sent me a $20 gift certificate a months ago because I responded to a question on Twitter for them and I need to spend it on something.

Snowshoes and Solitude :: We are a big fan of the show Survivorman around the house but one of the questions I always have is how we he do if his isolation lasted longer than 7 days. According to some friends who have seen the DVD, Snowshoes and Solitude goes a long way in answering that question and I am told it is worth watching and owning.

Survive! by Les Stroud :: This is a huge best seller in Canada and is by the creator of Survivorman. It’s a gift not only for me but will be fun for years to come as I hike with Oliver and Mark.

The Pod :: I have a camera and about four tripods. This is a great addition to the list because it is what happens when you combine a camera mount with a bean bag and it’s a lot easier to pack along on hikes.

Saskatchewan Roughriders: Welcome Sign :: If I get this, I plan to hang it in the cabin but it would also look good at home. I also am hoping for a Saskatchewan Roughriders water bottle and a Saskatchewan Roughriders magnet. The water bottle is for our house. The magnet is for the Reimer’s front door which they painted Rider Green while at the same time still being Winnipeg Blue Bombers fans.

Harmonica :: While I still can play the alto saxophone (or as I and Homer Simpson prefer to call it, the Saxomaphone, I really don’t have the desire to get the rust off and I never learned to play by ear. The other night I suggested to Wendy, “I want to play the harmonica.” which threw her for a loop. After waiting for the punch line, she asked me why I would want to. At least it’s not the bagpipes.

The SAS Survival Handbook :: Mark and I are planning to do some hiking this summer and I think it would be fun to teach him some of the stuff found in this book and Les Stroud’s book Survive!. Mark loves watching Survivorman and I think we will have a blast learning this stuff together. Plus, Mark has already said he was going to eat a grasshopper kabob after watching this episode of Survivorman and wants to learn how to make a fire to cook them on.

NCAA 2010 for the PSP :: While I love the NFL, there is something about college offences and the ability to run a triple option attack is fun. Plus, I now know that Notre Dame can’t stop it. That being said, Madden 10 would be pretty cool and I can see if I can do more with JaMarcus Russell than Tom Cable can.

LittleBigPlanet for PSP :: I was over at my brother Lee’s place and he has it for the PS3. Mark was enthralled, Wendy had fun and even Lee was enjoying it. It looks fun, Mark will borrow the game, and I can see Wendy killing some time with it. Good enough for me.

I couldn’t help but notice these great customizable Denver Broncos shirts from NFL Shop.com.

I am not a big Bocce ball kind of guy but I know we would have a lot of fun playing this as a family at the cabin. It may in the end be a better Father’s Day kind of gift because of the weather in Saskatchewan, if you live in a warmer climate, it may be a fun gift for your father.

There you go, it’s not a big list but it doesn’t really matter what I get for Christmas but I thought I would post it to give some ideas in case you know of someone who is as insane as I am.

Christmas Gift Ideas for Your Wife (and mother of your kids)

Wendy is the world’s hardest women to shop for and the suggestions from Amazon Gift Central just inspired sarcastic mocking comments. Wendy asked me to put together a short gift guide for you clueless husbands out there who are like one guy I know who bought his wife a watch every Christmas for over a decade. Of course there are the staples like jewelry, watches (unless you have done it every year for a decade), and more jewelry but if you are looking for something a little different, here is my list.

Of course before I get to the list, I need to tell you a story from Wendy. Years ago she was working Christmas Eve at the Safeway on 8th and Cumberland. In the morning it is really busy but by noon, it quiets down except for people running in for snacks for the road and people who have forgotten a few items. Around 4:00 p.m. when the store was empty a guy comes in and desperately says, “Do you sell any jewelry that my wife would like?”. Wendy was polite but wanted to suggest he just move out now as he is going to be in the dog house for a long, long time.

CBC Radio Retro Reporters Bag :: This has road tested for a year as I got it for Wendy last year and it is in still new condition. Wendy uses it as a camera bag, diaper bag, road trip bag, and everyday running around town bag. Made of durable cotton canvas with rugged adjustable strap. Small inside pocket. Two snap positions for smaller/larger contents. Measures approximately 12″ high, 14″ wide and 3″ deep expanding to roughly 7″. The only thing that Wendy didn’t like about the bag is that it snaps up and not zippers up. That being said, she hasn’t lost anything out of it so it hasn’t been an issue and like I said, it stood up well.
iPod Touch :: Wendy never had any interest in having an iPod Touch until she started to play around with mine one night. While the iPod Touch is pretty cool, she fell in love with the apps. I like the idea that I can sync it up with Google Calendar and Google Contacts which means that Wendy and I are on the same page with our schedules and our phone books. While we are a Yahoo! family, there is a great Yahoo! app in addition to great Dopplr, Flickr, Twitter, and other stuff that makes things like better. In addition to the practical apps, there are also some fun games that Mark loves when I am in meetings, waiting in the car while running errands or even heading to the lake. It also has the amazing NFB app which allows you to download NFB videos and watch them later. I can see it getting used a lot at the cabin. While an iPhone is a great gift as well for the right person, not everyone wants to pay the extra for a Rogers/Fido/Telus/AT&T contract. Regardless whether you get her an iPod Touch or a iPhone, she will be happy.
Nintendo DS Lite or Nintendo DSi :: I never really thought of this as a gift idea for Wendy but several women at work have one or want one. When I brought it up to Wendy, she thought it was a great idea because of how easy it is for her to play against Mark and his Nintendo DS Lite which makes it into a great family gift. Everyone is suggesting Brain Age but don’t forget the Namco Museum Classics.
I know Sarah Palin’s autobiography is a big seller right now but instead why not get her a book by someone that has actually accomplished something in life. I recommend Madame Secretary by Madeleine Albright. It’s a bit long but documents a fascinating time in American’s foreign policy where there was great achievements and big mistakes.
Don’t let the computer geeks in your life get all the cool toys, get her a Kodak Zi8 camcorder. While at first glance all of these cameras are equal, Kodak’s Zi8 is really a step above in quality. It has full HD 1080p video. You get sharper videos and less blur thanks to built-in image stabilization. There are no cables to worry about–just swing out the USB arm to upload, share and charge. You can share on Facebook and YouTube with ease–built-in software makes editing and uploading simple. It is compatible with PC and MAC (Use with Apple iLife Suite of products) operating systems and is compatible with iTunes for syncing with Apple TV, iPhone and iPod Devices. If you are looking for some other options, don’t forget the Flip Hino HD or the MoviePix HD (which I review here). While it isn’t HD, I have grown to like the Coby Snapp camera.
Electric Fondue Set :: Wendy loves a good fondue (me not so much) but one of the problems is getting the heat settings correct with candles. These electric fondue sets not only look cool but allow you to keep the chocolate/cheese melted without creating that wonderful burnt fondue smell. If you want to stay old school, Jysk has a great 23 piece fondue set.
10 Piece Chromium Frame Set :: If the person you are shopping for is a photographer, why not spoil her with his great 10 piece frame set. Make sure you shell out and pay for her prints made as well.
Suddenly Sauna Foot Spa :: This comes from Bath and Body Works but it is a foot treatment that starts with disposable booties that slowly warm up when you add water to them. Apparently women love them and they come with hand spas as well.
Wendy is legendary for taking my tools and never putting them back. It drives me insane. I have thought about booby trapping them but instead a better solution would be to get her a toolkit for herself starting with this designer toolbox. Sadly you know that your tools will end up in here as well but at least they will be put away… someplace.
Sangean WR-11 AM/FM Table Top Radio :: CBC Radio and NPR sounds so much more profound coming from a wooden radio. Speaking from personal experience, there is something about sitting around a radio on a hot summer day, sipping iced tea, while reading a good magazine.
While I am a fan of paper, have you thought of giving the gift of ebooks with a Amazon Kindle? It’s only 10.2 ounces, lighter than a typical paperback. It downloads books in Under 60 Seconds over the 3G Wireless network. Despite that, you have no annual contracts, no monthly fees, and no hunting for Wi-Fi hotspots. It’s battery can run for one week. You still have to pay per download in Canada but at least we can get it here now.
If you don’t think they want a Kindle, how about Sony’s Digital Touch Reader? By supporting both industry standard formats, ePub and PDF, you can access books at Sony’s eBookstore, check out books from public libraries, access over 500,000 free public domain titles from Google, as well as sharing sites, online aggregators and personal publishers (Internet access is required).
Mark was given a copy of Planet Earth: The Complete Series by the Reimers for Christmas and he loves it. Not only does Mark love it but so doWendy and I. Its a series we will watch again and again and harkens back to the days of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom where the entire family gathered around the television to take in the sites and sounds of animals we came to learn a lot about. It’s a great way to spend an evening of together as a family (if she isn’t tired of you by then)
