Following the good practice of others, I offer the following disclosure statement.
This is a personal weblog. The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of my employer. In addition, my thoughts and opinions change from time to time…I consider this a necessary consequence of having an open mind. This weblog is intended to provide a semi-permanent point in time snapshot and manifestation of the various memes running around my brain, and as such any thoughts and opinions expressed within out-of-date posts may not the same, nor even similar, to those I may hold today.
No one pays me to write this blog or to say particular things in it. That includes all forms of compensation, including offering to shovel my walk or tell me that I look like I’ve lost some weight. I don’t run ads, no one pays me under the table, and I don’t sell anything on the site.
How I make money
I make a living by working for a living. I presently work for Don’s Photo in Saskatoon. I do get a small amount from the sale of Amazon.com products via this site but it is usually spent on a video game or two for Mark every couple of months. While everyone has a price that they will sell out for, mine is quite a bit higher and I never link to a product on Amazon for the purposes for Amazon Affiliate revenue. I also write a weekly column for The StarPhoenix. They pay me to do it.
I use WordPress for this blog and Google’s Blogger for my other blogs. WordPress is free and I do pay a monthly fee to Dreamhost for them to host my site. In the past when I have caused problems for my site while tinkering, Dreamhost has done a good job in getting me back online.
I don’t have any clients that pay me money.
Authors sometimes send me free copies of their books. Often, explicitly or implicitly, they are looking for a mention. If I like the book, I may indeed mention it. If the author is a friend of mine, I’m pretty likely to mention it — because that’s what friends do — and I’m also much more likely to like it than some book that arrives from a PR agent. I’m probably not going to tell you that I got a free copy. Why? Because it doesn’t matter and because it makes me feel like I’m boasting. Also, it reads funny.
I am a Red Tory which means that I upset both my conservative friends and my liberal friends on almost every issue.
Inevitably, I use my judgment. For example, there are times when the mention is so slight or innocuous that the disclaimer would be out of place. Life’s too intertwined. That’s why we make judgment calls.
All I can promise is that I will be honest with you and never write something I don’t believe in because someone is paying me as part of a relationship you don’t know about. Put differently: All I’ll hide are the irrelevancies.
If you don’t like this or disagree, let me know.
