Last weekend I was pretty unplugged from the world and I came into work on Monday to find out our Executive Director was down in Maple Creek helping out with disaster relief operations with the Salvation Army. The relief effort is still ongoing and on Sunday night I head down with a co-worker to Maple Creek for a couple of days of serving food, handing out clean up kits and doing whatever that we are asked to do.
It’s about a five hour drive from Saskatoon. Apparently if we end up in Medicine Hat, we’ve gone to far.
There is a local corps in Maple Creek that is being lead by Captain Ed and Captain Charlotte Dean who were in Saskatoon when I first started work here. Among other things, Captain Ed was known for hiding behind doorways when I would do my security rounds. One time he scared me so badly, I yelled out loud long enough that I had time to think, “I should really stop yelling now”. The church is being used for sleeping, eating, and distribution centre for relief supplies.
