How a Vice Presidential Run Can Hurt Politicians

Politico has a good article about how a run at VP can hurt your further electoral chances.

But Palin’s run with Arizona Sen. John McCain, the 2008 Republican

presidential nominee, revealed a number of glaring weaknesses. Her knowledge about domestic and foreign policy turned out to be much thinner than her supporters had hoped. Ethical controversies from her service as governor dogged her all along the campaign trail. The association of Palin’s husband, Todd, with far-right organizations, including a secessionist party in Alaska, vastly diminished her appeal to independents and moderates. And her stumbling performance on a series of national television interviews left many Republican campaign operatives cringing, wondering if she would ever be ready for prime time.

She isn’t the first politician to be choosen as a VP candidate and then drop the ball (or in point guard terms, not be able to inbound the ball).  Sargent Shriver, Bob Dole, Geraldine Ferraro, and John Edwards all join Sarah Palin in this growing club that proves that an unsuccessful run for Vice President can be fatal to your political dreams.  We’ll see if Sarah Palin will be the exception that proves the rule or not but right now it doesn’t look that good.
