Keeler’s $543 influx of infrastructure cash

The Cooper’s come from Keeler, a town of 5 outside of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.  It just got it’s portion of the provincial stimulus package.

A day after Premier Brad Wall announced a program to fund local improvement projects, politicians from across the province were busy with their calculators to determine how much they will receive.

The math was easy for the village of Keeler, population five. With the per- capita allotment fixed at $108.79, the community northwest of Moose Jaw can count on $543.95.

It will have to subtract the cost of a one-page application form, an envelope and 54-cent stamp.

The money could be spent on the local landfill, according to Duncan Keeler, the village mayor.

"It requires fencing," Keeler told CBC News on Tuesday.

However, it was not clear if that project would be completely covered by the province’s Municipal Economic Enhancement Program.

"Five hundred dollars doesn’t go very far when you’re trying to build a good fence," Keeler pointed out.

He said spending ideas will be discussed at the next council meeting. The village will be well represented. Four out of the five citizens sit on council.
