Has this venue outlived its time? I think of places like Orlando who have marketed themselves as both family-friendly, as well as having the facilities for top-notch business presentations. As well as a ‘business-friendly’ setting. I envision a national sales manager telling his troops “Let’s make this end-of-day presntation quick, so you can go out and get in 18 holes of golf before dark.” Rather than “… go out and get schnockered and come in at 2 AM, and start the morning session on 4 hours of sleep and a hangover.”
New Orleans seems to have gotten away from a triad of music, fine dining and drinking. It just seems to market drinking nowadays.
A large convention center is one of the few buildings you can build below sea level and take an economic risk. Everything is portable, in case of flooding. The commercial life of carpet and wallpaper is short; a flood just means you move up your redecorating schedule a year or two.
The gold coast along the north edge of town lends itself to high end retail, like the shops in Las Vegas. That could be marketed with the convention trade, as well. And, as far as the Ninth Ward, bring in dirt and raise it above surge level, before rebuilding. There’s a railroad to the site, and plenty of labor is available to push dirt into place.
