That’s about 9k per wage earner. Or about a quarter of the average wage of the average worker. That’s pretty tough on those with “welterweight” incomes.
If we looked at the top two quintiles (essentially those with an associates degree, or higher), and taxed them about 20 k (on a sliding scale), it would relieve the bottom 60 percent a lot.
Cities are spreading out, and more and more lower-income people have horrendous commutes. It’s a lot better to pay a buck in taxes than spend a buck on oil. A lot of cities (like San Francisco) have living wages. Which means if you want fancy restaurants, you have to pay the help well, and charge accordingly.
But to have people commuting past large, unsafe “ghettoes”, with poor schools, is something that needs to be engineered out. But that’s a further study.
But, these huge defecits wake us up and make us think.
