Notre Dame is playing the University of Hawaii in the Hawaii Bowl. For me this is worse than last year’s 3-9 season. I know a bowl game is supposed to be a step up but the Hawaii Bowl was the kind of bowl in the Lou Holtz era that Notre Dame would say, “Thanks but no thanks, we have to stay at home and wash our hair rather than go to a D level bowl game on Christmas Eve.” Notre Dame will walk away $750,000 richer but even with a win, no one will respect them in the morning.

I think the larger reason Notre Dame accepted the bowl bid is for the NCAA-sanctioned extra practices. Don’t get me wrong, I am sure the money isn’t easy to turn down, but the real value lies in the additional time to start trying to overhaul the team for next season.
