Yeah, there were a few things like this in England back in the early 90s – usually run under the umbrella of existing Anglican churches. The one mentioned in the article, the ’9 o clock service’, is an unfortunate example, as the ministry collapsed in scandal shortly after this article was written.
I was involved in a south England group known as “Holy Disorder”, that was mentored by Anglican clergy, but mostly run by teenagers. It lasted for around 10 years, I believe, and much of what I see being explored in the emerging church today seems familiar to me from my Holy Disorder days – things like:
- The use of the visual arts in worship.
- A ‘sacred space’ feel to church rather than a warehouse.
- Discussion and dialogue between congregants as well as from the vicar to the people.
- A strong emphasis on community and relationships.
- Welcoming the active participation of all involved in creating worship.
Although Holy Disorder is no more, I think some of it’s legacy can be found in the ‘Fresh Expressions’ initiative.
