I don't know.
Until like I feel like I'm living within my means and not just participating in everything because i've always done it, its cool or i've created for myself a need that doesn't need to be there i guess.

You talked about a lot of things here Jordon, great post though, I enjoy watching tech guru's of sorts struggle with their passions to try to redeem them or get rid of them all together.

I choose to not even have a cell phone, no my dad's its ridiculous cause how do you run a business like that, to my friends its ridiculous because they can't get ahold of me right away, to my family its ridiculous because its unsafe. Yet I find its a necessary discipline for myself since i'm saturated in technology and ways for people to contact me in almost every other venue in my life. So my walk home, i don't want to be talking on my cell phone the entire time.

I think the deeper argument of this post though is that of staying local. Which i am trying to grasp a lot more now also. My decision is more to stop being captive to every amazing product out there, and be more driven by necessity than coolness. It's still hard to do (cause really I probably don't need any of the technology I have), but I find it helps me slow down my life a lot and appreciate what I do have.

My next question...do I really need air conditioning or am i just a suck?

Reminds me of Acts 3:6
Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk."

Kind of interesting. This week, I met someone at an Apple store, and, while waiting, got to play with a new I-Phone. Then met another friend, who had the earlier (and slower) version of the phone. My favorite app is the maps (on both) and GPS (only on the newer), but having the email is handy, too. I tend to buy toys because of function, less because the "look cool".

I look at my total communications bill - (copper) phone, cell phone, wireless and television and try to minimize it. One game I play is switching between cable and dsl, getting the bonus every year. I have a wall in my garage with four different dsl boxes, depending on the best offere that year. I'm waiting for U-verse, there's a box a few blocks away, but my box (at least I think it's my box) doesn't have the (distintly ugly) U-verse box next to it. At any rate, I'd like to keep my communications bill under 200 bucks.

As far as the church goes, all this communications horsepower doesn't mean much if the pastor has a Dunbar's number of 100. And 75 of them are other church planters in different regions! As much as we are saturated with seminars, I have yet to see one with a session on improving your Dunbar number. We've got the technology, now we need the software. 301 stuff - SHAPE, org behavior, etc - has gone by the wayside, but it will pop up somewhere else, and that's a good place to run with the technology, behavior skills and attitude to connect a congregation.

Well said. We have been trying to simplify life more and more of late. It is a tough process, as our selfishness keeps creeping in. Thanks for this timely reminder.

Peace,
Jamie
