On my railroad (BART in San Francisco), we get about three suicides a year. I have not had one, but know many coworkers who have. Nationally, about half of those who get a “jumper” never return to the rails. I don’t know how I would do, but it helps to have “two to the good” – over my lifetime, I have saved the lives of two people.

BART is a relatively inefficient way to go. The trains enter the stations at 36 mph, and do about 25 mph midway down the platform. The rest of the system is fairly inaccessable, and whenever someone wanders into the tunnels, we drive slow – between 2 and 5 mph. Many more suicides seek out Caltrain (San Jose-San Francisco trains), or Capitol Corridor (Sacramento-Oakland trains), since the rights of way have easier access. And, the Golden Gate Bridge is very accessable, too.

There are also spiritual ways to minimize railroad suicides.
