I was thinking of the cultural approach of what a career is. Where being a pastor is no differnet than climbing a corporate ladder except people are doing that in the churches they choose, the boards they sit on, the way they dress and live. That is what kills communities.

Darryl Dash blogged that when he got his D.Min, people at his church thought he would be moving on. We need to change the thinking with that.

Because of the internet people no longer need a local church to connect with one another. The days of the pastor in the local "church" being in control are over. People gathered at the "church" to connect to one another and were under the control of the church hierarchy. The leaders were in control (and often still are) of the programs and agenda. They are quickly losing control. We don't have to attend a "church" to connect to one another anymore. We can boycott enmasse any leaders or churches who try to control us. When we walk our money and support walks with us. The leadership had better listen and serve our needs or the institutional church will not survive.
Bill Gate wrote a book call "Business at the speed of thought"
This is how the internet is revolutionizing the world.
The sooner the instituional church recognizes this the better. If they continue to evolve at a snails pace they we loose any support they hope to have.
The power shift has begun.
They need us more than we need them!

Could you elaborate on this:

"Part of the problem is the idea of a pastoral calling being a career..."

Are you saying that being pastor should never be the full-time job of a person? Or rather, that the cultural approach to "career" & ambition are incompatible with the calling? I just want to be clear as to your meaning.

Peace,
Jamie
