Moving Beyond Church Services

Dr. Darryl Dash has a great column on his weblog that was written for Christian Week.
He quotes Dallas Willard, “We must flatly say that one of the greatest contemporary barriers to meaningful spiritual formation in Christlikeness is overconfidence in the spiritual efficacy of ‘regular church services,’ of whatever kind they may be. Though they are vital, they are not enough. It is that simple.”

Cell Phone

After shopping around for a cell phone the last week or so, I decided on a Sidekick II… the only problem is that FIDO/Rogers doesn’t sell them anymore. I did find out that if I can find an unlocked Sidekick II, they will support it. I checked around on eBay and they had some online but none of them were unlocked. A couple of salespeople tried to get me to buy the Motorola Q but I have been addicted to free phones for so long that I really am not interested in a long term contract and having to shell out for a phone/PDA.

I was warned by both SaskTel and Rogers that data charges for connecting to Gmail can quickly add up so I need to re-evaluate that need. They also both reminded me with much of Saskatoon to be covered by free wifi, perhaps I need to look at a Windows based PDA with Skype and Wifi which may be a better option. For now, I am on a month to month contract with SaskTel and until I find a better option, I may just stick with that.

I think I have spent more time on researching a cell phone than I did thinking about getting married to Wendy… and her and Mark come with lifetime contracts :-)

Goodbye Dodgertown

An amazing tribute to Dodgertown on ESPN.  You should take a look at it for it’s design as much as for its history and love for baseball.

Photo Friday: Growth

What is this?

Not sure what this is but it was some growth that was found on my front lawn.  It also makes a good submission for Photo Friday.

Cue Tumbleweed

This site has been a bit of a ghost town as of late for a couple of reasons.

  • Some longer writing projects. Almost done.
  • My nerves have started to hurt all over again. I can’t sleep, it hurts to walk, and kind of sapps your will to keep a weblog that really has no reason to exist any longer. The best part is that there isn’t much that can be done about it and I found out that I may be working some nights with should make the pain worse.
  • Exiles is getting closer to launch. New branding done. Posters to advertise with almost done. Website to redesign.

I need a nap.

When two world’s collide

I am writing an article on the future of the church for the Free Methodist Church in Canada’s magazine.  For me, the first 90% of any article or longer writing piece is easy.  The last 10% of the writing is horribly hard.  So last night I decided to watch some television while I edited and I turned to CTV Newsnet which was covering the Quebec election which causes major tension across all of Canada.  Forgetting for a moment that I gave up politics for Lent, I found myself inspired to rewrite the article while watching the coverage which may or may not mean that Jean Charest is the saviour of the Free Methodist Church.  It also means that I am doing the worst job of keeping an Lenten promise since I was in grade 11.

Bugatti Veyron

I am not a car nut by any means but I always said that I would love to own a Porche 944, until today when I fell in love with the Bugatti Veyron, which has a top speed of 253 mph/407 kph although at that speed, it’s mileage is 2.1 mpg.
  • The baseprice is a rather steep, $1,440,800 but you know, at 0% financing, over five years, you would only have to pay, $24,013 a month.
  • Maintenance will be possible at Bentley dealerships, but repair service will require a flown-in mechanic, whom the company promises will be available 24 hours a day.
  • According to Jeremy Clarkson, the host of Top Gear, if the McLaren F1 were allowed to reach 120 mph before the Bugatti started, the Bugatti would still be the first to reach 200 mph.
  • On another Top Gear episode (broadcast on 4 February 2007) James May tested the car’s top speed of 253 mph at Ehra-Lessien in Germany, which has a straight piece of track of 5.5 miles long, suitable for the test. Upon reaching the top speed of 407 km/h (253 mph), James May mentioned that he was “covering one football pitch every second” . In the after-comments section he said that the whole experience was rather disorienting, as he thought he had stopped and was ready to open the door when he looked at the speedometer and it was still at 70 mph. It is not known if this was his first test around the track or if he had many beforehand.

Here is a video of the car breaking the record.

It looks like the driver had some sort of religious experience.

The politicizing of Elizabeth Edwards’ cancer

JohnEdwards.comIf I was an American, I would be leaning towards supporting John Edwards for President for a couple of reasons which I have blogged about in the past, even if we share different views on some policies. Like a lot of people, I was shocked and saddened by the news that Elizabeth Edwards’ cancer has returned. Since then I have both prayed for her but I have also been dismayed by the second guessing on whether or not John Edwards should stay in the race. I know that a bunch of this is spin by other Democratic camps to make him and her look bad (politics is a rough game) and the media allows itself to be used and sure it could just be ambition for power or it could be something else. The need to not let the cancer dictate the rest of your life. Cancer takes way too much of ones life away and I respect her and the Senator for not yeilding an inch to it. Perhaps things will change but I respect there decision to stay in the race and fight the cancer on every front. We have been there as a family dealing with cancer and if this is the road he wants to take, no one other than John and Elizabeth are better equipped to make that decision.

New phone

It’s that time again. My contract with SaskTel is up and it doesn’t make that big of difference if I stay with them or go to Roger’s but I am curious if any of you have any suggestions for a phone. A cameraphone would be nice but I am wondering if a Razor is worth the cost? I know it is cooler but does it have the features that make it worth upgrading to from a regular clamshell phone? My only requirement is that it can run Gmail, which my current phone can’t do.

Before you say, iPhone, Cingular isn’t in Canada.

Harambee’s Mission

I was surfing the websites of some friends tonight and was checking out Harambee’s website. If there was ever a reason to exists, their about page sums it up.

In 1982, the neighborhood surrounding Harambee Center had the highest daytime crime rate in Southern California. The corner of Howard and Navarro, where we are located, was called “blood corner” because it was where the most drive-by shootings and failed drug deals occurred. Residents were held captive in their homes and there was little hope for change.

We believed the only legitimate way to become change-agents in this community was to become a part of it. Led by our founder, Dr. John Perkins, we moved into the community and became neighbors. For 20+ years we have served a 12-block target area, working with African American and Latino children and families.

“Harambee” means “Let’s get together and push” in Swahili. We seek to nurture and equip leadership that will wholistically minister to the community by sharing Biblical truths, in order to achieve the re-building of urban neighborhoods through relocation, reconciliation and redistribution.

That works for me.

Things it takes most of us 50 years to learn

A wonderful list that all of us should print out and tattoo on our forearms for quick reference.

May or may not contain food that is good for you

Your local plate of Chinese food….

The typical Chinese restaurant menu is a sea of nutritional no-nos, a consumer group has found. A plate of General Tso’s chicken, for example, is loaded with about 40 percent more sodium and more than half the calories an average adult needs for an entire day.

The battered, fried chicken dish with vegetables has 1,300 calories, 3,200 milligrams of sodium and 11 grams of saturated fat.

That’s before the rice (200 calories a cup). And after the egg rolls (200 calories and 400 milligrams of sodium).

Just in case you are thinking of heading to McDonald’s to get some Chicken McNuggets.  Here is what they are made of according to The Omnivore’s Dilemma.  Of course the blog post is interesting but the rebuttal in the comments is even more interesting.  It looks like The Omnivore’s Dilemma has some facts wrong… about Chicken McNuggests anyways.
